There was no sighting of three-star defensive end Nick Campbell from Lake Minneola (Fla.) High, who is on campus until 2:30 for his official visit, but the vibes are that Campbell’s visit is going well. The question will be will he want to keep taking the other trips he has lined up in June or will this be enough? Our initial hunch is that is a conversation that the family will be having when they return home to Florida.

Also visiting Sunday is three-star offensive lineman Isaiah Montgomery from Virginia Beach (Va.) Landstown High, but before he took a tour of the campus with his family, Montgomery decided to work out for NC State offensive line coach John Garrison. During the post-break part of camp, offensive coordinator Tim Beck himself came and kept a close eye on Montgomery.

From what we saw, Montgomery did well and is especially light on his feet. He ran the shuttle in 4.78 seconds, which is impressive for a 285-pounder. The question was and perhaps remains: is Montgomery a guard or a tackle? He’s a shade under 6-foot-4 in height, but he has a nice wingspan at nearly 6-foot-9.

NC State is firmly in the mix with Montgomery, who has official visits lined up to Illinois and Pittsburgh in June and is also considering offers from Virginia and Maryland. NC State’s desire is to find offensive tackles in this class, so if the Pack pushes it means it is sold on Montgomery potentially playing the position.

One of the most impressive performers at camp to these eyes was Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons tight end Jake Taylor. The class of 2022 prospect checked in at nearly 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds and is very athletic. He ran 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 4.25 seconds in the shuttle and had a 9-foot-11.5 standing broad jump and 31.3-inch vertical leap.

There were not any linebackers or defensive backs that could cover Taylor, but given NC State’s lack of needs at tight end and the fact that he played just four games as a junior (catching seven passes for 65 yards and a touchdown), the bet is that Taylor is a wait-and-see type who could potentially be an enticing walk-on option.

Three-star class of 2022 NC State target Wesley Grimes is not the only receiver that could be potentially emerging from Millbrook High in Raleigh. Class of 2023 product Nathan Leacock is an intriguing athlete. He’s 6-foot-2, 179 pounds and ran 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He also had a 10-foot-7 broad jump and did a 34.7-inch vertical leap.

We didn’t get a great look at Leacock in one-on-ones, but he was getting some extra attention from NC State. The catch is Leacock only played two games last year and caught a four-yard pass.

Coaches from Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina were among those watching camp today. Appalachian State had a particular interest in offensive lineman Phillip Gray III from Nashville (Tenn.) Ensworth High. NC State also did some extra drills with Gray on the side, a 6-foot-3, 306-pounder who reported an offer from Kansas back in 2020.
