Here is an early primer for the NCAA Wrestling championships.
There are 77 wrestling programs in the NCAA this year. There are five conferences. The most competitive is the Big 10 as all 14 members have wrestling programs and Penn State, Iowa and Michigan are the the big three in the NCAA these days. The Big 12 for years had powerhouse programs, like OU and Ok State and Iowa State.. who have won almost 50 National championships but today they are a shadow of themselves. Today only 4 Big 12 schools have programs, OU, OK State, Iowa State and West Virginia. To qualify as a conference you need six teams so they added Missouri who is the only SEC school with a wrestling program then they added seven other programs North Dakota state, South Dakota State,Wyoming,Northern Iowa, Airfare, Northern Colorado and Utah Valley. This once proud wrestling conference has two programs Missouri and Ok State who are 9/10/11 but everyone else is ranked 20 to 40. The Big 10 has five of the top 10 reams and 9 of the top 20. The Mac conference has 14 teams but the highest is ranked 30th. The southern conference has 9 teams with the highest ranked in Appalachian State at 48.
The ACC and Pac 12 each have the minimum six teams, however The pac 12 has only 3 real members, ASU, Stanford and Oregon State and thus added Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, and Little Rock.. ASU #5 and Cal poly #12 are solid teams , The ACC has the 4th NC State, 6th VT, Pitt #15 and UNC #20.
There is a wrestling association that acts as a conference EIWA ( eastern intercollegiate wrestling association that has 17 members with Cornell # 7 and Princeton ranked #17 as their anchors.
The tournament is 33 person bracket with a two person bracket to face the top seed wrestler in the first round. To win the championship you need to win five consecutive matches, Two on Thursday, Two on Friday and the Championship on Saturday Night. On the first day of the tournament you wrestle two matches in the championship round and if you lose you get the opportunity to wrestle back. We need our 10 weight classes to be alive on Friday Morning.
NCState Predcitions
I predict that Wilson# 2 seed at 149, Ed Scott #4 seed at 157, H Hidlay#4 seed at 174, T Hidlay #3 seed at 184 will win their first two matches and be in the 3rd round and win on Friday Morning. Friday night is a big night for the Wolfpack.. Most likely it will be NS state versus PSU at 174/184. If we advance we really hurt PSU chances of winning the tournament. It will also help our team score if Lewis beats Michigans Logan Massa in the semi finals to have a rubber match with H Hidlay. Same goes with T Hidlay against Michigan wrestler. We stop both PSU and Michigan points at two of their strongest weight classes I see Wilson winning his fourth round but running into a buzz saw in the finals. Scott is a freshman, finishing in the top 4 would be awesome. In this scenario we would score 71 points out of our Big 4.
It would be a huge bonus if any of the other weight classes were still alive in the Championship rounds on Friday Morning.
I see Trumble, Camacho, winning their first round matches, They both have tough opponents in the 2nd round but they are capable of springing an upset. If they win in round two I think they both have a good chance in round three. If they lose in round two I see both of them still wrestling in in the consolation bracket on Friday morning. I see both of them with a decent chance of being on the podium. I see them collecting 15 points. Now we have 86 points from our Big Six. last year fourth was 74 points Arizona State... last year we scored 68 points. We would need another 14-16 points to get 100 which might be good for 3rd.
Orine 133 and jack 141 both have rematches from the ACC that they won, however they also both lost to the same opponents earlier in the year. IN both cases they have really hard second round matches and see them having to drop into the consolation wrestle backs after a second round match. If they win their first round match I see them still wrestling on Friday Morning. If they lose in round one I see them being done on Thursday, Wrestling Friday morning gives them an outside chance of a podium Pic ( top 8) This would be a huge plus.
I think Bullard 165 has been given a tough draw. If he loses he will have a really tough time in the second round of the wrestle back bracket. He can give anyone a battle and is the hardest to predict but he has a tough draw for him.
I don't know how to predict the 285, I think he gets one round in the wrestle backs.
He are a couple of keys.. If we have more than five left in the Championship round on Friday morning that will be a good sign. If this is augmented with 3 or more still in the wrestle back on Friday that would be a good sign. If we get seven on the podium that will be an awesome tournament.
