The CP3 event had a nice tripleheader lined up at Greensboro (N.C.) Day, but it took a hit when senior guard Wendell Moore Jr. of Concord (N.C.) Cox Mill sat out the last game. The five-star prospect would have gone against the Denver, N.C., squad that former NCSU assistant coach Bobby Lutz has been coaching. That said, after USA Basketball and Nike Peach Jam, Moore has earned the right to rest a bit.
The first of the three games was CP3 16s against Team Charlotte. Admittedly, this squad is one of the few CP3 teams over the years that seems out of sync. You have three point guards in juniors Jalen Cone and Evan Johnson, and reclassed sophomore Camren Hayes, plus junior shooting guard Tristan Maxwell. Johnson had a nice game, and Cone showed some flashes in the second half.
Maxwell seemed to be the odd man out at times. College coaches in attendance also weren't crazy about Maxwell sitting on the bench while the rest of the team stood up and huddled about 6-7 yards away during a timeout with three minutes left in the game. People keep track of that stuff.
Sometimes players slip through the cracks for me (not college coaches), and Josiah James of Charleston, S.C., is one of them. He is ranked No. 11 in the country in the class of 2019, and head coaches from Duke (plus two assistants), Michigan State (plus two assistants), Kansas and Clemson were there for James against Team Felton. He does a lot of the same things that Moore does, but is more fluid as a point guard. His defensive potential is exciting and he has a great basketball IQ. He's a good athlete, but like Moore, he has work to do become a knock-down jump-shooter. I see a lot of overlap if Duke were to land both Moore and James. Moore might realize that at some point, if James goes down that route, and then NC State is sitting pretty for Moore.
Sophomore wing JaDun Michael of The Burlington School in Burlington, N.C. showed a nice jumper and has potential. Durham native Ricky Council IV, a junior wing, struggled to connect with his deep jumper. Council has some tremendous upside. Team Felton really struggled to score tonight.
