I had mentioned last week I'd be watching sophomores Sarah Strong and Blanca Thomas, both top 10 post players nationally, with Strong a Wolfpack legacy. I ended up catching four games in Concord, N.C., and when I walked in, it hit me after a bit, "Hey wait a minute, there are coaches here." The women's game has a different evaluation period than the men. I didn't see any NC State coaches, but former Wolfpack assistant Erin Batth was there repping Michigan. Maryland's head coach Brenda Frese came to see her prized junior guard commit play against Thomas and CP3 Flames 17s.
UConn had an assistant there to see Strong (not sure if she was there when Thomas played). Notre Dame had an assistant to watch both Thomas and Strong. Georgia, Alabama, Syracuse, ECU and Davidson were among other programs in the gym.
The physicality of the Fairfax Stars 17s squad from DMV bothered Thomas inside, who is a slender 6-5. Strong didn't play against a team as physical as Fairfax Stars, but she was rugged inside in taking care of business. Strong's outside shooting wasn't clicking, but she's like a point forward out on the perimeter. I'd guess she went for close to 20 points. Former NC State forward Danny Strong coaches the squad that he formed.
Two freshmen could be ones to watch in the future. Wake Forest Heritage power forward Sky Donaie is long and athletic at around 6-foot. She played up on the CP3 Flames 16s squad. Greensboro Western Guilford freshman power forward Kylie Torrence has a real chance and plays for CP3 Flames 15s. No coaches were at her game, so she'll probably be a secret for a little while. She went for 20 points against Fairfax Stars 15s and showed a nice touch in that 8-10 foot range. She's skinny at 6-0 and finesse, but it's clear she's productive. MaxPreps.com had her averaging 14.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game her freshman year at Western Guilford.
