Maybe there was some sincerity to it or maybe UNC just wanted to pick Belichick's mind. The only way it would make any sense is if Belichick got a college to name his son (Stephen or Brian) coach in waiting at 72 years old.
And he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would handle going 5-7 in college football.
