Day two of summer camps are in the books. Once again, there were several notable visitors in attendance that did not work out but nevertheless were of significant interest.
That included three-star verbal commitment James Valdez from Orangeburg (S.C.) Wilkinson, who is a solid pledge still planning on enrolling early at NCSU.
Valdez’s good friend and former teammate Donta Evans, now at Archer High in Lawrenceville, Ga., did make the trip and worked out for linebackers coach Dave Huxtable. The Pack is solidly in Evans’ top five (as is Auburn).
Evans’ teammate and Pack commit Kobe Smith, a defensive tackle, also worked out. The 6-foot-2, 314-pounder has impressive quickness and a long wingspan to compliment his strength and motor. The key for Smith will be redefining his body once he gets into a college strength and conditioning program.
Smith’s good friend and top NCSU target Tomon Fox from Collins Hill High in Suwanee, Ga., was also at the camp and probably the most impressive player we saw on the day. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder was simply too quick and explosive in one-on-ones to be contained.
UNC is the leader for Fox, but he seemed to be enjoying his time with defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen as well as Wolfpack sophomore defensive tackle Justin Jones.
A couple of other notable unofficial visitors were rising senior linebacker Jonathan Smith from Scotland High in Laurinburg, N.C., and rising junior defensive lineman Eric Crosby, a four-star prospect from Virginia Beach (Va.) Ocean Lakes High.
Smith was a late arrival for his visit as he was believed to have camped at North Carolina earlier in the day. The Pack had not been listed among Smith’s favorites prior to the visit, but State has made a strong early impression on Crosby.
Next to Fox and Smith, the defensive lineman that really impressed us was rising senior Martel Waugh from Union Grove in McDonough, Ga. He’s just 5-foot-11, but if he was three inches taller the 280-pounder would probably have his fair share of offers.
One notable name in attendance was rising senior defensive back Dylan Peebles, son of NCSU Hall of Famer Danny Peebels and cornerback at Wakefield High. The younger Peebles is plenty athletic, like his father, running 40-yard dashes in the 4.5-second range, but at 151 pounds is a bit on the light side on his 6-foot-1 frame.
Among the underclassmen, the biggest name camping may have been Davis Mills from Norcross (Ga.) Greater Atlanta Christian. The Pack offered Mills, 6-foot-3, 192 pounds. at the end of camp, joining Arizona State, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Missouri, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, UCLA, Wake Forest and West Virginia.
