Farmville Central proved the more well-rounded team in taking care of business 68-53 at Kinston on Tuesday.
NC State coach Kevin Keatts and assistant coach James Johnson arrived just before tip-off. To set the scene, with rain coming down, there was probably 300-plus people waiting outside until the doors opened up an hour before tipoff.
NCSU junior wing commit Terquavion Smith got off to a hot start, but then settled into the groove of the game. His upside is something else. He'll also probably drive NC State fans nuts at times with shot selection, free-throw shooting and inconsistency. However, his ceiling is considerable and he'll have games where he puts it all together and fans will be holding their breath. He said he's at 175 pounds (at 6-foot-3).
One scorer's book had Smith for 19 points and another had him for 20. He's just touching the surface and easily could have had 30 tonight. Samage Teel had a reported 25 points to lead Farmville Central. His deep shooting range broke it up in the second half. Still hard to believe some D-I schools haven't stepped to land Teel.
What could go wrong nearly went wrong for junior power forward Dontrez Styles for Kinston High. The book had him with 11 points, but some had him for 13 points.
Styles got into early foul trouble and never truly felt comfortable along the perimeter tonight. Most of his damage was getting into the lane and he's looking more and more like a power forward at the next level. He doesn't have the pure size of UNC's Garrison Brooks, but he'd fight him hard for position all game.
Farmville Central will now play Creedmoor South Granville at Minges Coliseum at ECU on Saturday. Junior point guard Bobby Pettiford and South Granville will need to finish off the final seconds of its game against Reidsville this week. Apparently, a South Granville student started interfering on the court and the cops responded with pepper spray. That could have been me dealing with that because some media guys did get sprayed.
