"When N.C. State coach Dave Doeren looks at his crowded backfield, he recalls the breakthrough performance from Montee Ball.

Midway through the 2010 season, when Doeren was Wisconsin's defensive coordinator, injuries to the Badgers' top two running backs forced Ball to play a prominent role in a game at Iowa.

Ball caught five passes for 41 yards, rushed three times for 18 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown as a third-string sophomore. He ended the season with five straight 100-yard games and finished his career with 5,140 yards.

"He never gave the job back," Doeren said.

Doeren considers his backfield depth at N.C. State a much-needed asset, given the unpredictability of injuries."
