"Thuney doesn't believe the Wolfpack running game will miss a beat against Troy without Thornton.
"Honestly, half the time we don't even know who the running back is back there because we have so much depth,'' Thuney said. "We don't worry about who is on the field or off the field. We just worry about making a hole for whoever is back there. We know they'll hit them and we have a lot of confidence in them.''
Doeren is so confident he's planning to redshirt the most highly touted member of N.C. State's freshman class, Princeton running back Johnny Frasier. Frasier was rated No. 1 in The Fayetteville Observer's preseason list of the state's Top 50 college prospects for 2014 and ranked the nation's second-best running back by TOS II.
But Doeren said Monday he'll allow Frasier to develop this season rather than waste a year of eligibility to run the ball three or four times a game.
"We're really excited about Johnny's future,'' Doeren said. "When he got here he had a lot of little things that took him away from the field. He had the flu for a while and he was struggling. He's just such a great kid with a great skill set.
"But in order to play him as a freshman, you don't just want to get him five carries a game. With Matt and Shad and Reggie and Dakwa and Jaylen Samuels, who no one has talked about, and Nyheim (Hines), we just wanted to make sure we're doing the best thing for his future. He and I have talked a lot this week and last week, and unless something changes the plan is to redshirt him and get him ready to be the guy.''
