NC State coach Kevin Keatts and assistant coach James Johnson were in Hampton, Va., for the first leg of the Nike EYBL. Assistant coach Takayo Siddle was in Dallas for the adidas event there. Also, former NC State point guard Anthony Barber was in attendance.
Keatts and Johnson watched some of junior shooting guard Cormac Ryan of Milton (Mass.) Academy, who Rivals.com ranks No. 64 in the class of 2017. He was one of the blow-up guys last July with Middlesex Magic, but has switched to the New York Rens. The shooter has most of his family as Yale graduates with an older brother playing there now. However, Cormac Ryan seems to be favoring Northwestern or Stanford.
Junior forward Jarius Hamilton of Concord (N.C.) Cannon School made his Georgia Stars debut in the EYBL, and they got smoked 74-42 against MoKan Elite. Hamilton went 3 of 14 from the field for six points and called it one of his worst games ever. He has talked to the new staff a little, so we'll see how it goes.
Junior small forward Hunter Tyson of Monroe (N.C.) Piedmont had 11 points and 7 boards and CP3 blew out Portland Basketball Club. Junior power forward Jaylen Hoard of High Point (N.C.) Wesleyan Christian also played well.
Dual-sport Tre Turner had 12 points for CP3, fresh out of releasing his top 10 for football recruiting. The Greensboro (N.C.) Northwest Guilford product said five of the 10 schools said he can play football and basketball.
The CP3 16s play at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. I caught up with Concord Cox Mill sophomore wing Wendell Moore and he likes what he's heard of Keatts and watched UNC Wilmington play both Duke and Virginia the last two years in the NCAA Tournament.
