Junior RB among those vying for “most versatile” title
Wolfpack junior running back Matt Dayes has been named to the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, presented by Texas Roadhouse, which recognizes and rewards versatile, high-level performers in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Last season, Dayes was one of just three players nationally with more than 300 yards rushing, receiving and in returns (Jamal Morrow of Washington St. & Temple’s Jahad Thomas were the others).
Dayes led the Wolfpack with both 1,278 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns and won team Offensive MVP honors.
He is the ONLY player nationally to reach those marks and also boast five or more touchdowns rushing and receiving.
Considered by many to be the most versatile player in the history of college and pro football, Paul Hornung won the 1956 Heisman Trophy and was the number one pick in the 1957 NFL draft. He played every position in the backfield during his collegiate career, while also punting, kicking, returning kicks and playing defensive back.
Finalists for the Hornung Award will be announced in late November and the winner will be announced in December.
