NC State is bringing in college veteran support staff coach Andy Vaughn, who has probably seen a little bit of everything over the years.

He joined the Clemson staff as a recruiting assistant from 2003-05, with the Tigers going 23-13 during that time under coach Tommy Bowden. Bowden was there 1999-2008.

Vaughn got out of college coaching from 2006-07, and returned at Middle Tennessee State under coach Rick Stockstill. The latter had been at Clemson from 1989-2002, so he knew Vaughn after he got hired at MTSU in 2006. Vaughn and MTSU went 31-31 from 2008-12, and Stockstill is still humming along at the school.

Vaughn then went to be part of the support staff under Brian Polian at Nevada from 2012-2015. Polian went 18-20 his first three years (and fired in year four). Polian is now support staff at LSU.

The next stop was Nebraska’s support staff from 2015-17, which was when Mike Riley was there, and they went 19-19 and was fired. Fun fact, Riley is now the coach of the New Jersey Generals in the USFL and generally regarded as one of the nicest human beings in college coaching.

Vaughn then spent nine months at Arizona for coach Kevin Sumlin, who is now co-OC/TE coach at Maryland. Arizona went 5-7 that season and Sumlin was done after 2 1/2 years.

Vaughn spent three years at Miami, March 2019-Feb. 2022 under coach Manny Diaz. Diaz went 21-15 in three years with three bowls before they brought back Mario Cristobal.

This past year, he was in the final year of coach Herman Edwards at Arizona State. ASU fired Edwards on Sept. 18, and the squad went 3-9.
