Three significant moves in the NBA today:
Wing Andrew Wiggins essentially traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Golden State Warriors for point guard De'Angelo Russell, Omari Spellman and Jacob Evans. Both Wiggins and Russell are polarizing players, but Wiggins has been playing pretty good this season, and to slide him in with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Kevon Looney and potentially a very, very high NBA Draft pick seems ideal for the Warriors. Spellman and Evans were late first-round picks. Golden State getting Minnesota's 2021 pick could also be interesting down the road (top three protected).
Minnesota has been hot for Russell since the summer and overpaid to get him. I'm thinking they know franchise player Karl Towns will stay and be OK with things if he plays with his good friend Russell. As a general rule, I don't really trust most personnel moves by the Timberwolves. They always do weird stuff. I do think Minnesota might be saving money in the long run by dumping Wiggins' contract, so there is that. Minnesota also traded center Gorgui Dieng, who I always liked, to the Memphis Grizzlies.
The second big move ... the Pistons did a flat out salary dump on center Andre Drummond on his trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Brandon Knight, John Henson and a second round pick. Drummond is 26 years old and averaging 17.8 points and an astonishing 15.8 rebounds per game and NBA teams must not want him, or the Pistons are the Pistons again. The Cavaliers are brutal but now have Drummond, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson in the post.
The Los Angeles Clippers with a shrewd move to get forward Marcus Morris, who is averaging 19.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, and shooting a blistering 43.9 percent on three-pointers with the New York Knicks. The Knicks got glue-guy Moe Harkless and a 2020 first-round pick, which isn't too shabby considering Morris is 30 years old and was a one-year rental for them.
Former Raleigh Broughton High standout Jerome Robinson was traded to the Washington Wizards in that deal. Isaiah Thomas was sent from the Wizards to the Clippers, but is expected to be waived. He is averaging 12.2 points and 3.7 assists per game for the Wizards, who have been without John Wall all season.
