Vanderbilt freshman point guard Shelton Mitchell will get the chance to be recruited by ACC schools again, if they deem him good enough. Mitchell signed with Wake Forest, and then was released and ended up going to Vanderbilt. He had hoped to get some ACC looks, but then the rule in place basically has deterred ACC schools to sign former ACC signees forever (see NC State defensive end Ty Linton's messy situation with UNC). NC State would have liked to have added him last spring as a stop-gap type to backup Anthony Barber, and were confident the ACC would grant the super rare waiver. However, Mitchell wasn't interested in going through all that and picked Vanderbilt.
Mitchell, who attended Waxhaw (N.C.) Cuthbertson for three years and then Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy, got beat out by fellow freshman Riley LaChance, but still had a key role for the Commodores. He averaged 4.3 points and 3.3 assists in 20 minutes per game for the NIT squad. Shooting and quickness have been the two areas of concern with Mitchell, and he shot 36.6 percent from the field and 7 of 31 on three-pointers.
