I will never forget hearing on WPTF that Dominique Wilkins had chosen to go to the University of Georgia. It was absolutely stunning to hear that news over the radio.
The ESPN series SEC Storied has a new episode out about Dominique's recruitment and career, with a special emphasis on his high school career and recruitment.
Fascinating episode. He even admitted he had signed a Letter of Intent to attend NC State before changing his mind. The episode does a good job of letting you understand why he made the decision he did, and the ramifications of that decision.
And frankly, the episode is a montage of clips that justify why he had the nickname The Human Highlight Film. Just amazing footage encompassing his high school, college, and NBA careers.
One irony, Dominique would have come in with the class of Sidney, Derreck, and Thurl. However, he turned pro after his Junior year at UGA, and we ended up playing UGA in the Final Four the next year. The UGA players firmly believe had they had Dominique in the Final Four, they would have beaten us. Dominique watched the game and felt the same thing. And apparently, based on the clips, UGA played Houston and Olojawan during Dominique's junior year.
Of course, you could argue had we had Dominique on our team the previous 3 years, we would have had even better results. But that is all a moot point now.
I would highly recommend any of those that remember Wilkins recruitment to watch this episode.
It was eye-opening for me. And very well produced.
And having lived in Atlanta for 20+ years myself, I can attest he's a class act.
