Sunday is a light day with teams having to travel home, so three 17s games in the morning and then some playoff action for the 16s and 15s in Hampton. The CP3 16s won some sort of consolation playoff. Assistant coach James Johnson watched some of CP3's game, but intently also watched the title match. Team Takeover 16s, led by sophomore center Charles Thompson, defeated Georgia-based AOT. Thompson has a crazy wingspan and is a sturdy 6-7. He attends Alexandria (Va.) St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School, and his father was a professional boxer.
I was hoping to get another good look at AOT sophomore wing Marcus Watson of Buford (Ga.) High, but he was in the coaches' dog house for not able to attend a practice and didn't play much. Watson, who is ranked No. 67 overall in the Rivals.com class of 2019, attended Clemmons (N.C.) West Forsyth last year and played on the CP3 15s.
The Team Takeover 16s also have four quality freshmen, who I liked a lot at CP3 Rising Stars Camp last August. Wing Earl Timberlake of Clinton (Md.) Christian could be a Justin Anderson clone and point guard Jeremy Roach of Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI is as explosive off the dribble as Anthony Barber.
In the 17s action, don't be surprised if Noah Locke ends up being a key target moving forward. Former assistant coach Heath Schroyer liked him with Team Melo 16s last year, and the junior combo guard continues to play well. His dad is a former assistant coach for the Washington women's basketball team, and NC State played against his brother in the past, former UNC Greensboro post player Kayel Locke, a skilled wide-body.
Johnson was also spotted watching Kris Monroe of Team Wall at a tournament in Hampton at a different location. The Raleigh St. David's reclassed junior power forward is a good three-point shooter and if he gets re-offered, might mean more small ball lineups in the future. The previous staff offered in mid-February 2016.
Johnson also watched Albany City Rocks vs. Team Final this morning, and I'm sure kept tabs on CP3, which ended up going 3-1.
CP3 15s also had a successful weekend, reaching the title game against Playaz Basketball Club, which is impressive. Raleigh Word of God reclassed freshman point guard Evan Johnson has a Penn State offer, but not sure who else on that team will be a high major target. It's too early to tell.
Saw a little bit of Jae'lyn Withers of Huntersville (N.C.) North Mecklenburg, who ended up playing with the Southern Stampede 16s. He didn't get a lot of playing time though. We'll have a story on him coming up.
