Went up to Stem (N.C.) Granville Central to watch them take on Creedmoor (N.C.) South Granville in the rivalry game Tuesday. Rasheed Wallace stopped in for the second half and I think he knew someone on the South Granville squad. He still creates a buzz even at 45 years old.
The main attraction was the two junior guards — Terence Harcum of Granville Central and Bobby Pettiford of South Granville. Both have been by NC State for unofficial visits over the last year, but neither has an offer. Raleigh Leesville Road junior point guard Carter Whitt is the main attraction at this point, and Whitt hasn't yet gone to a home game this season, a source did tell me he's been going to some practices.
Harcum and Pettiford just had Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young come by last Wednesday and they both have unofficially visited the Hokies. UNCG had an assistant in the gym last night.
Harcum is a little more raw than Pettiford (or Whitt), but is an explosive athlete and has a solid jumper. He had 20 points and finished with a triple-double (11 rebound and 12 assists, plus five steals) in the loss. He also showed that he needs to work on his decision making and become more polished if he's going to be a full-time point guard in a Power Five Conference. The tools are there but there is also pressure to be "Superman" in games against a better team like undefeated South Granville.
Pettiford is polished and smooth. He had 23 points and was efficient as can be. I'm shocked he doesn't have more offers (High Point, North Carolina A&T), but then I don't know how he looked with CP3 16s last July and that always trumps high school competition. He's not a blazer but he's fast enough and if anything would be a steady third guard in college. Now, if he wants to go to a mid-major type program and play heavy minutes, that is another route, but most kids want to try high major first and then transfer down if they have to. My guess is that the high major schools will eventually come around on him. They've been pretty slow in recruiting the class of 2021 in the state in general, probably due to the various NCAA rules that have cut down on evaluating players.
South Granville plays at Louisburg and junior guard Elijah Jamison on Feb. 4, and hosts Granville Central on Feb. 14.
