1. NC State seemingly has hit a home run on the unofficial visit with Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna junior quarterback Cedrick Bailey, who came last Thursday and Friday with his parents.
The 6-foot-6, 190-pounder considers Miami his hometown and Rivals.com has him as a four-star prospect. The recruiting relationship with NC State is relatively new with him getting offered Feb. 9, but it has escalated quickly to where Bailey has the Wolfpack as his current leader. No official visit has been set up yet, but it should happen.
Bailey looks like one of the most talented quarterbacks in the country on HUDL, and then combine that with his incredible stats and he plays for a high-level program prep program.
The offer list has high majors such as NC State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Texas A&M. To be honest, he looks like a Lamar Jackson kind of dual-threat quarterback. Maybe not as fast or the same kind of runner, but he makes plays that I’d call “outside the lines” for a quarterback, and that’s exciting.
Statistically, he went 203-of-289 passing for 3,335 yards, 45 touchdowns and just five interceptions in 13 games. He rushed 24 times for 215 yards and two scores, so again, he wants to throw more than run because he can makes things happen in the run game.
Bailey played against NC State linebacker signee Rohan Davy and Washington (D.C.) St. John’s, tackle signee Rico Jackson and Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Dillard and safety signee Daemon Fagan and Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage this past season. He knows both Jackson and Fagan, and is with the same 7-on-7 organization that Fagan played with.
Powerhouse Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman won a showcase end of the season game 49-14, and that was Chaminade-Madonna’s only loss on the season.
1b. Junior quarterback Jared Hollins of Semmes (Ala.) Mary Montgomery also came through last Friday with his grandparents.
Hollins was offered by NCSU quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper on Feb. 14, and he knew he wanted to unofficially visit Raleigh once his basketball season ended. Roper has a long-time connection to Hollins’ quarterback mentor, who played for Ole Miss when Roper coached there.
Since NC State offered, he has picked up offers from Boston College and Yale. He will take unofficial visits to Troy and Alabama in the near future.
Hollins is also a dual-threat quarterback, which is the new norm under the recruiting of Roper and new offensive coordinator Robert Anae.
Like Bailey, Hollins doesn’t have an official visit set up to NC State — yet. Bailey appears to be further ahead than Hollins, but quarterback truly is a position that you need to watch a full game, preferably live, than to rely on HUDL highlights. What is clear about Hollins is that he’s got a live arm and can throw on the run, and those are two good traits.
Add in Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy junior quarterback Jayden Bradford, it’s been a good last month for news at the quarterback position in the class of 2024.
I’ll have stories with Bailey and Hollins coming up this week.
3. NC State was able to bring in a good group of defensive backs in the class of 2023 with cornerback Brandon Cisse, safeties Zack Myers and Daemon Fagon, plus junior college cornerback Terrente Hinton and junior college safety Bishop Fitzgerald.
The Wolfpack have been laying the ground work to add another good group of defensive backs right behind them in the class of 2024. I have long said that NC State is in good shape (that doesn’t mean locks) with safeties Brody Barnhardt of Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day, cornerback Jivan Baly of Norcross (Ga.) Meadowcreek and cornerback/athlete Ondre Evans of Nashville (Tenn.) Christ Presbyterian Academy. All three have been to NC State, and Evans came last week.
Barnhardt is down to NC State, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, West Virginia and North Carolina, and it’s clear he’ll likely commit by the summer (if not sooner).
Baly came out with his top eight Sunday with NC State, Miami (Fla.), Florida State, Missouri, Kentucky, Louisville, Georgia Tech and Texas A&M. He will officially visit NC State on June 23.
What has proven exciting is another four defensive backs have also emerged. NC State leads for nickel Asaad Brown of Fredericksburg (Va.) St. Michael, just had Nashville (Ga.) Berrien junior safety Josiah Davis on campus last week for the first time, and have obvious ties to NC State legacy recruit Adrian Santana Wilson of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Desert Mountain High. Wilson is the son of former NCSU safety great Adrian Wilson, who was just hired by the Carolina Panthers organization.
Joining Barnhardt as an in-state option, Charlotte Independence junior defensive back Quentin Reddish could play either nickel or free safety, and has 17 total offers.
It remains to be seen how many scholarships get used on defensive backs, but the board looks promising.
4. NC State was able to squeeze in an unofficial visit from Southlake (Texas) Carroll junior kicker Kyle Lemmermann, who was en route to doing a spring break cruise.
Now, Lemmermann is highly thought of due to his success at camps like Chris Sailer Kicking and Kornblue Kicking, but hasn’t actually kicked much on the varsity in high school. Why? He got stuck behind a highly effective class of 2023 kicker last year. Senior kicker Tyler White went 17 of 19 on field goals with a long of 55, and 153 of 155 on extra points the last two years and signed with Texas A&M. White had to wait his turn behind kicker Joe McFadden, who had signed with Connecticut.
NC State has some serious currency going with kicking specialists due to kicker Christopher Dunn and NFL punters A.J. Cole and Trenton Gill. it helped lead to landing Western Kentucky graduate transfer Brayden Narveson to replace Dunn.
NC State also has made it clear that between a 2024 kicker or another graduate transfer, there is a need for a kicker for next year.
Lemmermann has been to NC State, Texas Tech, TCU, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Baylor since last summer. He also recently went to Texas Tech and Texas Christian, with both offering him a scholarship. He also has been offered by Texas-San Antonio.
Lemmermann came away impressed with NC State and could return in the future for an official visit, so there is a chance to get him away from the Texas-based colleges.
5. It is always important to cover the state of North Carolina recruits extensively — which is still ongoing — and that has been summed up with the home page of "Friday Night Rewind" as a home page, it's also been important to cover the players NC State has offered from Georgia. The rankings have shown that the talent is a little down at some positions in North Carolina, and that is where Georgia and Florida to a certain extent come into play.
Here is a recent run of stories on Georgia prep prospects who NC State is actively going after:
