Each month, The Wolfpacker will be updating its mock class. This is edition No. 5 for the offense. The changes from the fourth mock class on this side of the ball were minor, with the addition of an offensive line being the notable difference.
Unlike the last mock class,when we projected 11 signees on offense, this time we have a dozen.
QB – Three-star Aaron McLaughlin, Alpharetta (Ga.) Denmark High
McLaughlin made us look good in our second mock class when he projected him to be in it. He made a verbal commitment to NC State in May. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound McLaughlin threw for 2,018 yards and 17 touchdowns last season.
McLaughlin is a former Auburn commit who when reconsidering options also looked at Arkansas, Baylor, Louisville and Miami.
RB – Two-star Demie Sumo, Willingboro (N.J.) High
We first included Sumo in our second mock class as one of two running backs, and then in the third edition Sumo was the lone runner in it. Then Sumo made his verbal commitment to NC State on July 1. The Wolfpack landed Sumo over Temple, Northern Illinois and Buffalo.
Sumo is a do-it-all 6-foot, 200-pounder. In 12 games as a junior, Sumo carries 65 times for 648 yards, averaging almost 10.0 yards per rush, and 11 touchdowns. He also caught 21 passes for 430 yards and eight scores. He averaged 24.8 yards on eight kickoff returns, running one back the distance.
Defensively he had 53 tackles, including 5.5 for loss. He picked off two passes (including a pick six), recovered two fumbles and forced four loose balls.
For now, we continue to have Sumo as the lone running back in the class, but this is a position where it cannot be ruled out that another addition will be made.
WR – Three-star Jakolbe Baldwin, Rockingham (N.C.) Richmond County High
While Baldwin has added a couple of offers (Michigan State and Vanderbilt) since committing to NC State, we don’t see any signs of Baldwin being anything but firm with the Wolfpack. Duke had previously offered him. Baldwin (6-foot, 175 pounds) caught 34 passes for 687 yards and eight touchdowns in 12 games as a junior.
WR – Four-star Micah Crowell, Kernersville (N.C.) East Forsyth High
Crowell is another player that we had in our previous mock classes that proved to be smart after he committed to NC State in June. Gray picked the Wolfpack over Wake Forest. Crowell is expected to enroll early.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Crowell missed his junior season with a torn ACL, and that may have caused some colleges to back off. As a sophomore, Crowell caught 25 passes for 511 yards and seven scores on a state-title winning team.
WR – Three-star Julian Gray, Huntersville (N.C.) Hopewell High
Gray has already committed to NC State and brings speed and production to the slot. The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder caught 57 passes for 1,217 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior, and he has been timed at under 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Gray is a lifelong Wolfpack fan (so he claims, at least). Gray added an offer from South Carolina after picking NC State and previously had scholarships from Duke, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. He is expected to enroll early.
TE - Three-star Cedric Seabrough, Swainsboro (Ga.) High
We have long contended in our mock classes that we expected NC State to end up with a pair of tight ends in the class. On July 4, that happened when the Seabrough twins announced their verbal commitments to the Wolfpack. Cedric (6-foot-4, 220 pounds) grabbed 58 receptions as a junior in 2019 for 800 yards and 13 touchdowns. On defense, he added 11 total tackles including eight solo and three assisted.
Although the Seabrough twins had always been prominently mentioned in our weekly top 25/50 lists, we did not list them in any mock classes until after they committed.
TE - Three-star Fredrick Seabrough, Swainsboro (Ga.) High
Fredrick, also 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, caught 36 receptions last season for 703 yards and seven touchdowns. He did more damage on the defensive end than his brother, however, with 37 totals tackles (21 solo, 16 assisted) in 12 games.
The Seabrough twins' options were limited because the two were a package deal. Despite an early offer from Maryland, they had narrowed their choices to also considering UAB and Coastal Carolina before picking NC State.
OL – Three-star offensive lineman Lyndon Cooper, Carrollton (Ga.) High. The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Cooper was a new addition in our third mock class and also included in the fourth. He announced his verbal commitment to the Wolfpack on July 20, picking NC State over an offer from Syracuse.
OT – Three-star Jaleel Davis, Rockingham (N.C.) Richmond County High
The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder committed to NC State in May. He was included in our previous mock classes. Davis also had offers from Georgia Tech, Kansas, Maryland, South Carolina and Tennessee.
OL – Two-star Thornton Gentry, Chapin (S.C.) High
Like Davis and Cooper, Gentry was a player we had in our previous mock classes that made us look good by picking NC State since. Gentry also had offers from Kansas State, Missouri, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Appalachian State and Central Florida, among others.
OL — Three-star Yousef Mugharbil, Murphy (N.C.) High
It will not be easy to land the 6-foot-4, 300-pounder, but Mugharbil has developed a strong relationship with NC State offensive line coach John Garrison, which is helping the Pack’s cause. Mugharbil has been in our last three mock classes, but that does not mean we believe that NC State is a given. Florida is a strong challenger, and UNC is expected to pick up its pursuit after recently losing an offensive line commit.
OL — Jaqavius Yates, Jones College in Ellisville, Miss.
We are just taking a guess here about a potential offer down the road. Admittedly, our guesses on potential Pack offers have not been good in previous mock classes, but the 6-foot-5, 290-pound Yates is on NC State’s radar and is a teammate of recently enrolled safety Rakeim Ashford. Yates has a few mid-major offers like Troy, South Alabama and Louisiana-Monroe. He is a native of Crystal Springs, Miss., and was second-team all-conference as a freshman.
