The Pack obviously will not have a basketball game this weekend in either the men or women’s. The women’s team has been able to work out a couple of rescheduling games, but as astute observer on the The Wolfpacker staff Justin H. Williams noted the fact that Duke and Virginia have opted out of playing in women’s hoops this year opened up three dates for NC State to reschedule.

We don’t yet know the extent of how long the men’s team will be out, but we have not yet heard that next week's contest at Virginia is out of the question, either. We can confirm one detail: that the alert about a COVID outbreak in the athletics department is unrelated to the men’s teams recent positive test result.

What is important over the next few days is making sure that the positive case remains an isolated one, and if so when the team returns it should be at full strength.

Classes will be back in session this week for NC State. Making some assumptions here but confirming names in the student directory suggests a far larger class of early enrollees than originally anticipated:

• Three-star receiver Jakolbe Baldwin from Richmond Senior High in Rockingham, N.C.

• Two-star safety Sean Brown from Hough High in Cornelius, N.C.

• Three-star guard/center Lyndon Cooper from Carrollton (Ga.) High

• Four-star receiver Micah Crowell from East Forsyth High in Kernersville, N.C.

• Three-star corner Nate Evans from Cox High in Virginia Beach, Va.

• Three-star linebacker Caden Fordhman from Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla.

• Three-star offensive lineman Thornton Gentry from Chapin (S.C.) High

• Three-star receiver Julian Gray from Hopewell High in Huntersville, N.C.

• Three-star corner Mario Love Jr. from Hough High in Cornelius, N.C.

• Three-star quarterback Aaron McLaughlin from Denmark High in Alpharetta, Ga.

• Three-star linebacker Jordan Poole from West Stanly High in Oakboro, N.C.

• Three-star defensive lineman Travali Price from North Lincoln High in Denver, N.C.

• Two-star defensive lineman/long snapper Jayden Tate from North Lincoln High in Denver, N.C.

We had confirmed that Baldwin had been added to the original list of spring enrollees in last week’s War Room. The newest additions are Evans, Price and Tate. We should note that in the lead-up to signing day Tate had suggested that he and his brother, Price, would be enrolling early. Both previously had been expected to play their senior year at North Lincoln but had an apparent change of plans.

Also on the list in the directory is Florida State safety transfer Cyrus Fagan, who we independently confirmed earlier in the week that would be in Raleigh for the spring.

That would leave the Seabrough twins, three-star tight ends Cedric and Fred from Swainsboro (Ga.) High, three-star offensive tackle Jaleel Davis from Richmond Senior High in Rockingham, N.C., three-star defensive lineman Zyun Reeves from East Forsyth High in Kernersville, N.C., three-star safety/linebacker Chase Hattley from Panther Creek High in Cary, N.C., and three-star running back Demie Sumo from Willlingboro (N.J.) High as the players not arriving this spring. We had previously known that Reeves and Hattley were planning to play this spring in their senior football season if it goes off as planned. Also, as a reminder, Cedric Seabrough is a blueshirt, which means he will arrive the day of preseason camp as a walk-on but will immediately go on scholarship and count towards the 2022 class scholarship limits.

Also waiting till mid-May to arrive will be FSU defensive line transfer Cory Durden and Fairmont State grad transfer Chandler Zavala, an offensive lineman and Division II All-American.

One thing that is noteworthy is that junior college offensive tackle transfer Anthony Belton from Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Ga., is not yet on the above list of confirmed students in the directory. Belton had planned on being a spring enrollee.

With the challenges and sacrifices that were made during the football season to pull it off in a pandemic, unsurprisingly there has been some time taken to unwind. Players and staff were both given time off before reporting back for spring preparations. Early word is that the second week of March will be the start of spring practices, but that is tentative and likely written in pencil.

Interestingly, there is no spring break on the academic calendar this year. Instead, there are a few “wellness days” where no classes are held to give student a break.

Conventional wisdom would suggest that the spring roster should be finalized by the time classes are starting. We are not yet aware of any further development in terms of players leaving or of prospects of interest in the transfer portal at this point. There are a few players that NC State has shown interest in that we know about, but they are all national level prospects in the portal who are likely to end up at a high profile SEC program, from what we have gathered.

To reiterate what we have said in the past, the primary focus is at cornerback, but offensive tackle and even linebacker are also options. The goal is to get an established Power Five player (i.e. Fagan or Durden) or an all-conference/All-American mid-major/lower level prospect (i.e. Zavala).

There is wiggle room for a prospect in between, someone like tight end Cary Angeline, who had no tape on the field at USC but was familiar with the staff from his recruiting days and also was honored as USC’s version of offensive scout team MVP in his redshirt year.
