A quick note on this weekend's game against Miami. There were some concerns about the possibility of a postponement due to a COVID positive test at Clemson, which was officially announced by the ACC on Friday. Clemson obviously hosted NC State on Tuesday, and the Tigers game at UNC for Saturday has been postponed. However, barring a late development the game Saturday at noon on RSN is still a go.

NC State has the potential to add one more player, at least, to its 2021-22 basketball roster, and the indications are clear that head coach Kevin Keatts is looking hard at transfer options that pop up.

Paul Atkinson, a post forward from Yale that was the co-Ivy League Player of the Year, had been an option but he chose Notre Dame, which was somewhat expected. Two new names then emerged this week.

NC State held a Zoom call Thursday evening with West Virginia big man Oscar Tshiebwe. There is no denying Tshiebwe’s talent, but his sudden departure from WVU did raise some eyebrows.

That said, they do not seem to be dissuading colleges. He is conducting Zoom meetings today with Illinois and Kentucky, and a decision will either be announced tonight or Saturday, per sources. There is some chatter that Miami may be the team to watch, although some presume that the blue blood Kentucky program cannot be discarded.

Regardless, Tshiebwe would be a potential addition for next season for wherever he lands, and we know that NC State is interested in adding one more post player for the 2021 class. One option also continues to be that Raleigh’s Word of God Academy junior Jai Smith, could reclassify up to the 2021 class.

The other transfer option is Houston guard Caleb Mills, a native of the state of North Carolina. One key to watch with Mills is how long is he wiling to wait. A source tells us that if Mills tries to enroll later, then it’s quite possible that he will end up in Chapel Hill because that is the earliest that the Heels could take him. It has been confirmed that UNC head coach Roy Williams has reached out to Mills’ family.

If Mills is more interested in making a quick decision, that could open the door for NC State as Mills has expressed a desire to play closer to his home near Asheville. Given the amount of suitors Mills will have, we probably are hard-pressed to believe he is on a quick path to a choice.

Today’s decision that redshirt sophomore linebacker Payton Wilson is returning rather than entering the NFL Draft is not a surprising development. There had been little expectation that Wilson would actually enter the NFL Draft, but a little positive publicity with an announcement of that return never hurts.

It comes on the heels of receiver Emeka Emezie being the first at NC State to take advantage of another senior season. Going into the bowl season, there was growing optimism that Emezie would make this choice, which is why when asked on a chat about the odds of Emezie coming back we said better than 50-50.

The remaining big decision to come is defensive end Daniel Joseph. There has also been some optimism that Joseph will take advantage of another year. There was general agreement from sources that Joseph probably stood the most to gain by going for another year.

We have also seen signals that Joseph, a native of Toronto, views the CFL as a viable option if he does not make it to the NFL, so that’s why we might have a little more hesitation with Joseph than we did with Emezie. Unlike Emezie, Joseph is a fifth-year senior who is also on his second school.

We continue to believe it is likely that tight end Dylan Parham, receiver C.J. Riley and perhaps cornerback Chris Ingram will also take advantage of another senior season at NC State.
