Normally at this point we would have been able to pick up a few tidbits about what to expect on the depth chart. Presuming there is still a depth chart to be released on Monday, we have far less idea what to expect this year.

Our guess is that given the pause in practice and the holding out of players via contact tracing quarantine, that made the competition more difficult and will likely lead the coaches to go with the more proven commodities to start.

The questions we have:

• Did fifth-year senior receiver C.J. Riley have enough time to show he’s fully healed from his torn ACL to challenge redshirt sophomore Devin Carter for the starting job.

• Does fifth-year senior tight end Dylan Autenriethget his old starting job back at tight end (he technically was the starter over classmate Cary Angeline at the beginning of last year).

• How does the offensive line shake out, especially at right tackle and right guard?

• Similarly what does the defensive line look like? We went on a limb in our projected defense depth chart and went with sophomore Savion Jackson and fifth-year senior Daniel Joseph as the starters surrounding junior Alim McNeill. The fact that Joseph was made available to the media this week might be a telling sign, but before reading too much into that, he could have also simply been requested by a media member. We know that was the case with sixth-year senior offensive tackle Tyrone Riley, who was similarly made available.

Nevertheless, we’ve heard that Joseph has done a nice job acclimating with the Wolfpack program on and off the field.

• Linebacker will be very interesting. Redshirt junior Isaiah Moore is a proven leader and capable linebacker, but he may be getting pushed by sophomore Drake Thomas, and defensive coordinator Tony Gibson admitted it was going to be hard to keep redshirt junior Vi Jones off the field now that he is eligible. The playmaking of redshirt sophomore Payton Wilson is another potential difference-maker, yet NC State has other good players who warrant snaps.

It’s a good problem to have.

• Senior corner Chris Ingram had not been cleared to full practice earlier in camp, and the latest we have picked up is that he is still having to work his way back into the mix. So odds appear that there will be other guys occupying the depth chart at cornerback. Junior Teshaun Smith appears a strong candidate to start.

• Our guess is that sophomore Jakeen Harris will have the starting job at safety next to junior Tanner Ingle, but it will be interesting to see how that shakes out as well.

A quick note on basketball recruiting before moving on to football recruiting. We feel good about our current FutureCast projection for guard Breon Pass from Reidsville (N.C.) High to the Wolfpack. Pass will announce his decision on Sept. 26.

The follow-up question naturally is what does that mean for the rest of the class? The Pack technically has room for three scholarships in 2021, but we know from a well-informed source that there was already a contingency plan of sorts to make room for a fourth of Fletcher (N.C.) Christ School prized forward DeAnte Green decided to reclassify up into the 2021 class. In essence, NC State was prepared to Green if that was going to be the case.

Thus we still believe that NC State is going after four-star center Roosevelt Wheeler from John Marshall High in Richmond, Va., as sources had told us that Keatts had a desire to get a fourth big onto the roster. Currently he has three scheduled to return in 2021-22: redshirt sophomore Manny Bates and freshmen Ebenezer Dowuona and Jaylon Gibson.

By the way, the GoPack.com roster has been updated for the hoops team, and here are the heights and weights for the newcomers:

No. 2 Shakeel Moore – 6-foot-1, 180 pounds
No. 3 Cam Hayes – 6-foot-3, 175 pounds
No. 11 Jaylon Gibson – 6-foot-9, 210 pounds
No. 21 Ebenezer Dowuona – 6-foot-11, 235 pounds
No. 30 Nick Farrar – 6-foot-6, 260 pounds

The only other changes are redshirt junior A.J. Taylor is now wearing No. 14 after being No. 3 last year and fifth-year senior wing Devon Daniels going from 205 to 200 pounds while senior guard Braxton Beverly went from 180 to 185 pounds. Also Taylor’s classification suggests that appeals to get Taylor a redshirt for missing most of last season with a knee injury were not successful.
