It was my choice to attend NC State College where I earned an undergraduate degree and NCSU for a Masters. I feel that the knowledge acquired served me well in two careers. When I tell someone that I graduated from "State", I say that with pride.
Most our coaches and "student athletes" chose to be a part of our university. Many years ago, because of the mutual choices, I considered those people my brothers and sisters. Now they would be more like my sons and daughters. My brother and I were competitive even when growing a garden. Not always was I proud of some of the things he did but he was my brother and I loved him. "You can say anything you want to about anybody but don't say anything bad about my family"
In the USA, competitive sports activities beginning with the very young engaged in city leagues, public schools, private schools, colleges, universities, professionals and the Olympics are funded by spectator ticket sales, participant fees, advertisements, concessions, fund raising activities and donors (may have left our some). I have yet to hear one athlete, coach, sponsor or donor who does not wish their individual or team to "win". Since every individual or team is trying, granted some engage more in practice and spend more money than others, I do not believe that any individual or team "deserves" to win.
All that being said, when NCSU excels either academically or athletically I seem to have a bit more spring in my step and my friends consider me more tolerable.
