Jimmy Bass stop the bleeding and fired former Roy Williams assistant C. B. McGrath after starting the season 5 – 14 (0 – 6 in Colonial). McGrath was in his 3rd year after finishing 11 – 21 and 10 – 23 in his first two years after replacing Kevin Keatts. In three years at Wilmington, Keatts had records of 18 – 14, 25 – 8 and 29 – 6 and finished in 1st place in the Colonial regular season every year (2 tournament titles). In the 3 years prior to Keatts arrival, Buzz Peterson sported records of 10 – 20, 10 – 20 and 9 – 23. It is hard to lose 20 games in a season – NC State has never done it in over 100 seasons.
