NC State hosted senior point guard Deivon Smith of Loganville (Ga.) Grayson High and senior center John Hugley of Cleveland (Ohio) Bush High, and ended up offering junior wing JaDun Michael of Burlington (N.C.) School, who unofficially visited. Raleigh Leesville Road junior point guard Carter Whitt ended up not attending the football game.
Neither Smith or Hugley think they are close to committing, but both really enjoyed their visits. Smith was joined by his parents and Hugley came with his mother. Smith will visit Louisville next weekend and doesn't have anything else lined up. Hugley will still visit Pittsburgh and Miami in Sept. Neither seemed to indicate they will sign in November for sure, but if they take the visits, they'll have the info to make an early decision.
Smith really liked how the fans showered love on head coach Kevin Keatts at the football game. Hugley got to hang out with fellow Cleveland natives DJ Funderburk and Markell Johnson, and he got to talk to power forward commit Nick Farrar of Apex (N.C.) Friendship. Both think they have a chance to play key minutes next year right away.
Smith texted me back later and he was surprised that new prep teammate Caleb Murphy picked South Florida. He didn't know ahead of time that would happen.
Michael was very happy getting an NC State offer, which is his first ACC offer. He has been a steady climb up the recruiting ladder this spring and summer. He was supposed to unofficially visit this past summer, but the Twitter-verse was wrong, and Saturday was the first time he had been to NC State. There was some talk about Michael reclassing to 2020, but he's just 17 years old, so that seems unlikely at this point.
