This is the time of the year that you start seeing some new offers going out, and NC State is clearly moving on towards the underclassmen at this point. At least three new offers went out this past week, including a pair to prominent in-state targets, but we’ll start with one that is likely to come soon.
NC State is still gathering more information before making a final decision on defensive tackle Wisdom Asaboro, who is playing at Covenant Day School in Matthews, N.C. (which lost to Charlotte Country Day and NCSU senior offensive tackle commit Triston Miller last Friday). For now Asaboro is listed as a class of 2019 recruit, but the 6-foot-8, 280-pound former basketball player is, we understand, more likely to end up in the 2020 class even though he is apparently 18 years old and will age out of high school football in the state of North Carolina.
Asaboro’s film shows exciting athletic potential, and NC State, we believe, is close to offering. They would join a list of heavy-hitters that are jumping in like Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and UNC. We believe most if not all are recruiting Asaboro with the understanding that he will be a 2020 prospect that will enroll early in the spring of 2020.
If Asaboro is firmly in the 2020 class, he would become one of the more sought after players in the class in the state, presuming he stays and doesn’t transfer to somewhere he can play next fall.
NC State is also hoping to dip back into its Mallard Creek High in Charlotte pipeline. It offered class of 2020 three-star running back Trenton Simpson this week. Simpson (6-foot-2, 205 pounds). NC State joins an offer list that includes Duke, North Carolina, Purdue, South Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest. It is worth noting that the early expectation is that NC State is seeking just one running back in the 2020 class.
Mallard Creek will play at Cornelius (N.C.) Hough High, featuring three-star Pack commit and defensive back Jalen Frazier, on Nov. 2. We would not be surprised if NC State coaches are in attendance.
The list of class of 2020 in-state offers at the moment include:
• Quarterback Nolan McLean from Garner High
• Running back Trenton Simpson from Charlotte Mallard Creek High
• Receiver Porter Rooks from Charlotte Providence Day
• Receiver Ray Grier from Belmont South Point High
• Receiver Muhsin Muhammad from Charlotte Myers Park High
• Offensive tackle Mitchell Mayes from Raleigh Sanderson High
• Defensive end Jacolbe Cowan from Charlotte Providence Day
• Defensive end Kedrick Bingley-Jones from Charlotte Providence Day (committed to Florida)
• Defensive end Desmond Evans from Sanford Lee County High
• Defensive end Myles Murphy from High Point Southwest Guilford High
• Linebacker Mohamed Kaba from Clinton High
Also in the 2020 class, NC State was the first school to offer tight end John Copenhaver from Roswell (Ga.) High. Kansas also offered this week, shortly after NC State’s offer. Copenhaver is an athletic 6-foot-3, 210 pounder that would be more suited for the H-back role at NCSU.
For those wondering, NC State has 15 scholarship juniors on the roster, but one of them, defensive end Joe Babros, is tracking towards redshirting this fall. Another, receiver Kelvin Harmon, is a decent bet to enter the NFL Draft early. Receiver Jakobi Meyers is another potential early draft entrant. Thus early projections suggest that NC State will take around a class of 20 players in the 2020 class.
The Pack’s hope is that it can complete a banner 2018 season so that it can collect the elite-level in-state prospects. Thus far the three that are tracking the best for NCSU in the 2020 class are Mayes, Evans and Rooks, but all three will be national-level recruits. Clemson is aggressively going after Mayes for instance, and Evans just picked up an Alabama offer.
In the 2021 class, NC State offered receiver Gavin Blackwell from Sun Valley High in Monroe, N.C. this week. Blackwell appears to be tracking towards no-brainer status. The sophomore already has offers from Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and West Virginia in addition to NC State.
NC State’s early class of 2021 offers belong to:
• Athlete Kaemen Marley from Ramseur Eastern Randolph High
• Athlete/running back Will Shipley from Matthews Weddington High
• Linebacker Jack Hollifield from Shelby High
• Corner DeAndre Boykins from Concord Central Cabarrus High
• Corner Mario Love Jr. from Cornelius Hough High
• Athlete Dontavius Nash from Gastonia Hunter Huss High
Boykins, younger brother of South Carolina class of 2019 linebacker commit Derek Boykins, was offered last week, as was Nash. Marley was offered earlier in the fall, while the other three were offered before their junior seasons. Hollifield is the younger brother of Virginia Tech freshman linebacker Dax Hollifield.
