The biggest recruitment that we are following at this point is four-star quarterback MJ Morris from Pace Academy in Atlanta, Ga. There was a time where Morris had Florida State as his favorite, although we have suspicions that too much may have been made about that.

However, as we noted in our latest top 25, there are indications from various sources that Florida State is not near the leader as originally perceived, and in fact there is a growing feeling that Georgia Tech is NC State’s bigger threat, which we had been previously hinting. It is noteworthy that unlike most of Florida State’s visitors for the Noles' spring game last week, Morris did not hang around afterward when many of the players actually spent an extra day in Tallahassee. (Official reason apparently given is that Morris had to get back home to watch his brothers play a baseball game.)

It’s quite possible that Georgia Tech, which we understand had long felt it was in good position with Morris and perhaps were caught off guard by word that the Seminoles were leading, did a lot of the groundwork in curbing the Noles’ momentum. It’s also possible that might end up working in NC State’s advantage.

The question is how strong is Georgia Tech? The Yellow Jackets are supposed to hold a spring game next Friday, April 23, and the expectation is that Morris will visit. We suspect that Georgia Tech is going to push hard for a commitment after that weekend. However, we do not think that Morris will make a decision until May, and we’d be shocked if it lasted into June.

Although Morris intends to make an unofficial visit to Nebraska on May 1, but we’d be very surprised if the Cornhuskers were a serious threat based on everything we have heard. Thus if it is true that FSU has faded some, this may be developing as a Georgia Tech-NC State battle, and ultimately it could come down to does playing in hometown Atlanta appeal or not.

As for the other quarterback on NC State’s board, four-star Braden Davis from Middletown (Del.) High announced his top seven and it included NC State along with Cincinnati, Duke, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Stanford and West Virginia.

While NC State is a player for Davis, who has visited Raleigh four times now, we’d watch for a late charge from South Carolina that seems to have caught Davis’ attention, as well as Stanford.

If Morris and Davis end up elsewhere, the best bet is that NC State will work out quarterbacks at its summer camps, which will be held the first three weekends in the month of June. Schools may also be allowed to work out prospects on days that camps are held in a twist to this year due to the extensive dead period that is about to end on May 31. It will count as a form of evaluation.

Three-star center Rylan Vann from Cary (N.C.) High’s commitment to NC State was a very unsurprising development. As we had previously noted in the top 25, Vann came across as someone who had his mind made up and it was just a matter of an announcement.

There’s no question that Vann’s older brother Davin was an influence in the recruitment, including on NC State’s side. Davin’s bright future and development for the Wolfpack helped convince the coaches to pursue Rylan, who may not have quite the measurables Davin possessed, especially athletically, but nevertheless is a very physical lineman with impressive film.

We continue to believe that the next closest to committing is three-star athlete Jackson Vick from Southern Nash High in Bailey, N.C. NC State is recruiting Vick as a corner. Wake Forest and Duke are the top competitors, but we would give the Pack a healthy edge, and we think Vick could be decided before May is over, along with Morris.

Otherwise, we anticipate June being a potentially crazy month for football recruiting, starting with three-star defensive lineman Nick Campbell from Minneola (Fla.) Lake Minneola High.

Just a brief reminder that the transfer portal is also a big deal in football, and NC State continues to monitor those who are popping up on it after spring practices end. For some players, the end of spring is the final confirmation that perhaps their future is blocked on the depth chart.

Once such example could be Ohio State offensive tackle Max Wray, who went into the portal this week. Wray started against Michigan State last season at right tackle and played in five games overall for the Buckeyes. By all accounts, Wray did well in that contest against the Spartans, but national runner-up Ohio State is returning both of its normal starters at offensive tackle.

Wray is a 6-foot-7, 308-pound redshirt sophomore and was a Rivals250 product coming out of Franklin (Tenn.) High.

The word we have heard is that NC State feels pretty good about its offensive line depth coming out of the spring, especially when redshirt freshman Timothy McKay gets cleared and transfer Chandler Zavala arrives on campus, but adding an older offensive tackle was a priority in the transfer portal in the winter.
