With the decision of Virginia guard Casey Morsell to transfer to NC State, some may wonder if the Pack is done? The original answer seems to be not if the Wolfpack can help it.

Two of NC State’s primary targets in the transfer portal are nearing a decision, with a decision date already set for this weekend for one of them.

Charleston Southern transfer guard Phlandrous Fleming will announce his decision Sunday, and East Carolina transfer forward Jayden Gardner is announcing Monday.

Prior to Morsell’s commitment, we would have thought the trend lines were positive with Fleming after one of the top competitors, Virginia, landed Indiana transfer Armaan Franklin, who like Fleming is a shooting guard. It’s difficult to see taking both Fleming and Morsell.

It is Gardner where most of the intrigue is, and we have to admit the news from various sources are decidedly mixed. We can say that there are some sources close to the Wolfpack program who feel pretty good about NC State’s chances.

On the other hand, one source with inside knowledge to his recruitment indicated that NC State is looking less likely following his final round of virtual meetings. This source believed Virginia is the leader in the clubhouse, but LSU is also making a strong late push for the prized transfer.

Considering a clear hierarchy of schools has never seemed to have materialized with Gardner, any of the top five schools on his list, which also includes Miami and Arkansas, are potential destinations.

However, we do believe, at least at the time of writing this War Room, that NC State is still pushing to land Gardner, which if it happened would obviously mean that someone else is transferring.

On that front, we have nothing new to report.

NC State hosted four-star quarterback MJ Morris from Pace Academy in Atlanta on Thursday. We did a story on Morris a couple of weeks ago and detailed how his growing relationship with offensive coordinator Tim Beck and tight friendship with early enrollee interior lineman Lyndon Cooper was helping NC State out.

We have traded texts with Morris since his visit and hope to have more for a story, but early indications are that the visit did the Wolfpack a lot of good. Where does his recruitment stand should become more familiar in the next few weeks.

A lot may depend on if Florida State makes a big push for Morris when he visits for its spring game. We have heard that FSU prefers AJ Duffy as its second QB in the class, and Duffy is also visiting Tallahassee this weekend. However, we doubt FSU would put Morris on hold to wait on Duffy. In fact, one source expects FSU to put a full court press on Morris to commit.

A source close to Morris told us two weeks ago that Georgia Tech was his quiet leader, and GT insiders feel the same way. We think this visit and the Pack’s late momentum may have NC State squarely in a top three. Nebraska, Stanford and perhaps Arkansas are also in the mix.

Morris and Braden Davis from Middletown (Del.) High remain the top quarterback options for the Wolfpack. Davis recently added an offer from South Carolina, who could become an instant wildcard in his recruitment.
