It will not be long before we are able to set out doing a top-25 list for the 2022 class. Our earliest guess is that the final number for players taken could creep up to around 15, and there will likely be a chunk of that set aside for the transfer portal, as that is likely to become a norm for the immediate future for most colleges.

Here is how the top 10 for that list would be if we were doing it now.

1. Center Rylan Vann, Cary (N.C.) High — The younger brother of NC State freshman defensive tackle Davin Vann also has an offer from West Virginia, but we’d be pretty surprised if he went somewhere besides NC State.

2. Three-star defensive back Isaiah Crowell, Winston-Salem (N.C.) East Forsyth High — Similar to Vann, although Crowell has quite a few more offers, it’s just difficult to see him not playing with his brother Micah Crowell, an early enrollee receiver for the Wolfpack.

3. Three-star defensive back/athlete Jackson Vick, Bailey (N.C.) Southern Nash High — A recent offer from Wake Forest offered a dose of healthy competition for the Wolfpack. He has former teammates, both running backs ironically, at both schools now. For NC State, that is sophomore running back Zonovan “Bam” Knight.

4. Four-star linebacker Torren Wright, Kannapolis (N.C.) A.L. Brown High — Wright’s recruitment has not quite taken off as his ranking would suggest, but nevertheless of the higher rated prospects on the board, he's NC State's best chance, currently.

5. Four-star running back Michael Allen, Greenville (N.C.) Rose High — This may be a reach right now to put Allen this high, but since last fall there have been sources at NC State really excited about Allen. The feeling is he is exactly what the Wolfpack may need to bring in at running back at this time.

The X-factor is a potential baseball career, and his recruitment is sure to explode more. NC State needs running backs in this class, and it’s quite possible transfers could be an option here.

6. Three-star receiver Mehki Wall, Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley High — Wall was one of the first receivers that new position coach Joker Phillips reached out to when he arrived in Raleigh, so that would seem to indicate he’ll be a high priority. One of NC State’s likely chief competitors for Wall, UNC, has also already taken a similar-type receiver in the class,

7. Three-star receiver Quanye Veney, Highland Springs (Va.) High — As we get further into the spring we will have a better understanding of who is a take and who is not, but if Veney is indeed a take, then NC State figures to be a strong contender. It’s worth noting he claimed a Maryland offer as well, which is where Phillips was at prior to coming to NC State.

8. Three-star offensive guard Trequan Alexander, Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit High — NC State and Virginia Tech are his two major offers, hence why he would be high on the list.

9. Three-star defensive lineman Davin Jackson, Sumter (S.C.) High — A recent Wolfpack offer, he also lists scholarships from Georgia Tech, Kansas and West Virginia. That is obviously a list that the Wolfpack can compete against.

10. Four-star defensive tackle Curtis Neal, Cornelius (N.C.) Hough High — Among the top defensive linemen in the state, Neal has always been the one that NC State felt best about their chances with, hence it was a fairly big surprise when his early favorites list did not include the Wolfpack.

Like is the case many times when a prospect releases a so-called favorites list at that point of their recruitment, it has great flexibility to it. NC State is a player in this recruitment.

Turning to basketball, here is a top five ranking of how we view the prospects in the 2022 class:

1. Four-star guard Jayden Epps, Suffolk (Va.) Kings Fork High — As we’ve noted a few times, we have some who tell us that Epps to NC State may be close to a done deal. He also has Arkansas, Florida, Providence, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech in his final six.

2. Four-star guard MJ Rice, Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy — If Rice was picking today, we think with high confidence that he would pick the Wolfpack. We believe Epps may be a little further along in his recruitment, however.

As we’ve noted before, a potential Duke offer could change a lot with Rice.

3. Three-star center Brandon White, Winston-Salem (N.C.) Christian — Short of a UNC offer, there is a lot of reason to like the Pack’s odds with White, including that he plays for the same coach who led Moravian Prep in Hickory, N.C., when Josh Hall and Shakeel Moore signed with NC State.

White (rated No. 133 nationally in the 2022 class) has offers from Houston, Maryland, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, so it will not be an easy recruitment.

4. Four-star forward Tyler Nickel, Elkton (Va.) East Rockingham High — We will have a story soon about how NC State is one of the four schools recruiting Nickel the hardest, along with Cincinnati, Iowa and Virginia Tech.

5. Four-star guard Donald Hand Jr., Virginia Beach (Va.) Landstown High — Louisville and NC State are two schools that the son of the former Virginia player Donald Hand seems to like at the moment.[/B]
