NC State basketball had an incredible run of iconic coaches for 40 straight years which included Case, Maravich, Sloan and V all in a row. That was a remarkable run of coaching talent you’d be hard pressed to find tied to a single program anywhere. We’ve had 5 coaches over the last 30 years and none of them have come close to the aforementioned bunch. KK has a long way to go to join that group.

So what happened? Did we just luck up for 40 years and then have the opposite of that the last 30? There has to be more to it than just dumb luck. Even a program with a limited history of success like VT has managed to identify and land two straight coaches that appear to be top shelf based on results. Where are we going wrong? Short of breaking the bank to hire already established coaches, why were we repeatedly successful back then but can’t get anywhere close to it now?
