NC State is adding a pair of guards in the 2021 class in Breon Pass from Reidsville (N.C.) High and Terquavion Smith from Farmville (N.C.) Central. Both are posting huge numbers this senior season.

Smith is averaging 27.4 points per game to go with 4.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.2 blocks. Pass is contributing 34.4 points, 14.0 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 2.6 steals and 2.2 blocks.

We’ve talked to quite a few sources about the two over the past few months, and it’s an interesting picture that is created for two players who, despite the gaudy statistics, are not rated especially high. Smith is considered borderline top 100 while Pass has flown under the radar.

Smith tends to create a wide range of opinions, with those who like him strongly believing in his potential and those who are skeptical on the opposite end. There has not been a lot of in-between with Smith.

The summarized report we get: think of a longer, taller version of Markell Johnson from a frame/athleticism standpoint who could develop into an Al Freeman-type scorer in time — a double-digit scorer capable of really explosive scoring games when his streaky shot is going in.

That streakiness has been on display this year: Smith started the season going 4 of 22 on threes in the first three games, and then made 10 treys in 29 attempts in his next two contests.

Another comparison we heard was former (briefly) Wake Forest guard J.T. Terrell, who averaged 11.1 points per game as a rookie for the Demon Deacons in 2010-11 and then went to USC, where he averaged 11.7 and 9.7 points per contest over two years respectively.

The skeptics note that Smith is a high-shot volume scorer who can shoot you to a win but can also shoot you out of a game.

Pass scores incredibly high across the board on a universal basis for his intangibles. Winner and leader are two adjectives used a lot to describe him. One source noted that even if Pass does not turn into a star at NC State, he at a minimum will be a coach’s favorite who could be Kevin Keatts’ version of Jordan Goldwire at Duke. Goldwire is a complementary player who has earned the trust of Coach K for the Blue Devils and has played around 25-30 minutes per game the past two years. One difference however is Pass is a far better shooter than Goldwire.

There are quite a few however who believe Pass will end up proving to be a steal.

Pass and Smith are set to make it two straight years where Kevin Keatts’ recruiting class will be heavily centered around a pair of guards, and that leads us to the 2022 class, where it appears that there is momentum building strongly between NC State and yet another combo guard known for his scoring: four-star Jayden Epps from King’s Fork High in Suffolk, Va.

The 6-foot-2 Epps averaged 26.0 points per game in 2019-20. He released a top six of Arkansas, Florida, NC State, Providence, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech. Epps is rated the No. 106 overall prospect in the 2022 class by Rivals.com, although we understand it is conceivable that Epps could reclassify into the 2021 class if he wanted.

A source with knowledge this week told us that the rumblings are that Epps could be a done deal for NC State. That conventional wisdom was further enhanced when recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw submitted his FutureCast prediction on Friday afternoon for Epps to NC State.

Keatts loves his guards, and Epps would certainly fit the profile of Pass, Smith and current freshmen Cam Hayes and Shakeel Moore. Epps is a strong shooter more known as a scoring guard.
