It is safe to say that the football team made a big impression in recruiting this past weekend.

As some saw in Adam Gorney’s column this week, there were some rumors that other schools were trying to poach four-star QB commit MJ Morris from Carrollton (Ga.) High away from the Wolfpack.

Some may wonder if one of them was his other finalist Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets are moving on another QB who visited for their win over UNC, Pinson (Ala.) Valley’s Zach Pyron, who recently backed out of a verbal commitment to Baylor. Sources tell us the Jackets are not heavily, if at all, involved with Morris at the moment, and truth be told we have been given no good reasons yet to think Morris is not solid with the Wolfpack.

On a side note, there was a rumor we heard about a month ago that UNC might be expressing interest in Bailey (N.C.) Southern Nash High three-star athlete and Pack commit Jackson Vick, but in our digging we found little to suggest that there was anything to them, and Vick seems solid in his commitment with the Wolfpack.

To date, those are the only rumors we have heard involving NC State's commits.

There is a chance for momentum to build in recruiting, but more so for the 2023 class than 2022. It’s worth reminding a valuable lesson when it comes to football recruiting: you tend to recruit off your most recent season rather than the current one.

In other words, the fall of 2021 will be the primary season that leaves an impression on the 2023 class. For the 2022 class, most of them made decisions based off what happened in 2020.

Thus unsurprisingly most of NC State’s coaches will be on the road this week checking out class of 2023 players.

We have heard that NC State does continue to recruit three-star senior receiver Wesley Grimes from Raleigh Millbrook High, and as we noted when he committed to Wake Forest, Grimes had the appearance of a recruitment that may not necessarily be over. We can say that he was the Clemson game.

That said, we have not picked up any indications that Grimes is softening up on the Deacons yet, who are enjoying a fun start to their season themselves.

This weekend should be a lighter one in recruiting, although four-star class of 2023 defensive tackle Keith “K.J.” Sampson from New Bern (N.C.) High will be taking an unofficial visit for the game.

Sampson has proven to be a big fan of the recruiting process thus far, and he will be releasing a top 10 on Oct. 13.
