One recruiting development to watch this weekend in football could be an unofficial visit from receiver Terrell Timmons from Greensboro (N.C.) Northern Guilford High. NC State will not have a significant amount of recruits in attendance Saturday against Furman, to be expected especially when considering UNC is hosting Virginia in a more marquee showdown in the same primetime, 7:30 slot. Next week when Clemson comes to Raleigh will be a more significantly more attended game from a prospects' standpoint.

A stroll down history lane would show why Timmons' trip could be a development to watch. In November of 2019, NC State offered receivers Christopher Scott Jr. and Jalen Coit while they were visiting for the Pack’s home game against Clemson. Coit quietly accepted on the spot and made it official a few days later, while Scott came back for an official visit and then chose NC State despite also getting a late offer from Vanderbilt.

Timmons’ potential visit comes fresh off NC State assistants Joker Phillips, receivers coach, and Todd Goebbel, tight ends coach, watched Timmons catch four passes for 155 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 50-0 win over Elon (N.C.) Western Alamance High on Sept. 3.

During the summer, Timmons briefly was a verbal commitment before betting on himself and backing off the pledge (Scott did similarly his senior year of high school). Timmons shined at NC State’s camp to the point where it has been widely believed he went to the top of the board after three-star Wesley Grimes from Raleigh Millbrook, who made a recent commit to Wake Forest, vaulting among others fellow Greensboro wideout Mehki Wall from Dudley High.

In basketball recruiting, as we noted on the State of Basketball board this week, signs look much more favorable with the looming decision Wednesday from four-star center Shawn Phillips from Ypsilanti (Mich.) Ypsi Prep Academy.

A week ago, we were still hearing from sources that were questionable about NC State and hearing more West Virginia chatter. We also noted in last week’s War Room “there are some around NC State that are (very) optimistic about Phillips, but we also know some in Raleigh that are more skeptical.”

Well, many of those who were skeptical have now been turned around into liking the odds for the Pack. Furthermore, one source who was feeling WVU last week that is not affiliated with NC State in any form is now also hearing NC State.

We are thus now preparing as if Phillips will announce for NC State on Wednesday and answering the question who will be the first to commit to the Wolfpack in the 2022 class. Ole Miss is the third team under consideration for Phillips.

Sources who have seen Phillips have described him to us as a developmental prospect but what is undeniable is that he has the size/frame you cannot teach at 6-foot-11, 250 pounds. He is a pure center, as well. Opinions are mixed on Phillips, whom Rivals.com ranks as the No. 98 overall player in the 2022 class. He had an up-and-down summer. Some are more intrigued by his upside and potential while others question how realistic it is he can reach there.

Later Friday afternoon, after this War Room has been posted, one-time NC State target Justyn Fernandez from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., will announce his commitment. He has taken official visits to Florida and George Mason, and the scuttlebutt is that Fernandez will pick the latter.

NC State did offer Fernandez and bring him in for an unofficial visit the same week that four-star Donald Hand Jr. from Virginia Beach (Va.) Landstown High came to Raleigh. Sources have indicated that Fernandez may not have been the highest on NC State’s board on the wing, however.

Also worth noting that regardless of that, Fernandez had already set up his five official visits and they did not include NC State.

But NC State is putting a lot of its chips in now with four-star (and rapidly rising prospect) Daniel Skillings from Philadelphia (Pa.) Roman Catholic. Skillings is officially visiting NC State this weekend. Sources have indicated that Skillings emerged by the end of the summer as the Wolfpack’s top target on the wing. Skillings is currently ranked at No. 106 nationally in the 2022 class.

He has already made official visits to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, and Skillings has a trip lined up to Miami next weekend. Those four schools appear to be at the top of Skillings’ board.

If we had to guess, we think a trio of Phillips, Skillings and three-star forward De’Ante Green from Asheville (N.C.) Christian would be an ideal three-player class for head coach Kevin Keatts in November.

Green is choosing Nov. 1 between NC State, Wake Forest and Florida State.

The one question we do have is will NC State stop at one center (Phillips) and power forward (Green)?
