If it feels like there has been a lull in football recruiting, that will probably be changing rather quickly in a couple of weeks. The month of June is shaping up to be a hectic one across the country as prospects are chomping at the bit to get out and enjoy the recruiting process, either with official visits, unofficial trips that still allow face-to-face contact with coaches or through summer camps.

As a reminder, NC State’s summer camps will be Friday through Sunday the first two weekends of June, and then Friday and Saturday on the third weekend. There will also be a 7-on-7 camp June 17 and a specialist camp June 6, although we do not, at the moment, anticipate NC State targeting kickers in this class (odds favor them doing so in the 2023 class).

Before then, however, we still have the recruitment of four-star quarterback MJ Morris from Pace Academy in Atlanta to watch (as we noted in the recent top 25 there are rumors that Morris is returning to Carrollton High for his senior season).

There were also strong rumors of a May 12 announcement, but to be completely fair we’ve had a hard time tracking down why that date came about. On May 11, a source very close to Morris told us “two weeks,” without specifying if that meant two weeks from then or a general timeframe.

However, there was a tidbit of information we received that leads us to believe that the planned announcement could be on Memorial Day weekend. Regardless of the exact date, we can state with fair certainty that Morris and his family have long had a date in mind to announce the choice, but it has been their preference to not release it.

As for where he will land, our expectation remains that it will be either Georgia Tech or NC State with Nebraska a wildcard.

Timing matters a lot in football recruiting. With that in mind, here are a few recruits where sooner is better in terms of a decision from NC State’s perspective, and some where later is better.

Later:

• Four-star defensive tackle Curtis Neal from Hough High in Cornelius, N.C.: Neal hinted this week that he could be ready to decide after taking official visits to Ohio State and Wisconsin in June, and that those may be the only two trips he’ll need. He noted that he was ready to get recruiting over with, but NC State would certainly rather he wait to get back to Raleigh before deciding anything.

• Three-star linebacker Xavier Simmons from Northwest Guilford High in Greensboro: UNC started out as a strong favorite for Simmons, and NC State has done a decent job chipping away at that advantage. More time could help erase it further (and increases the odds that perhaps UNC ends up filling up at linebacker).

• Three-star offensive tackle Andre Roye from St. Frances in Baltimore: Roye has already lined up official visits in June to Rutgers, Maryland and Penn State. If you are the Wolfpack, you hope that Roye doesn’t decide after those trips and entertains more visits in the fall, unless he decides to also squeeze in an OV to NC State in June.

Sooner:

• Three-star defensive end Nick Campbell from Lake Minneola (Fla.) High: NC State grabbed so much momentum with Campbell in March that it would be good for him to decide before that wanes off. The Pack gets the first official visit in June, and ideally it would be the only one.

• Four-star defensive lineman Brandon Cleveland from Carrollwood High in Tampa: If you’re NC State, you have the longest relationship among the schools now involved with Cleveland and you are bringing the former Miami commit in for an official visit in June. Again, striking while momentum is hot is the goal.

• Perhaps four-star running back Michael Allen from Rose High in Greenville, N.C.: We think Allen will pick NC State or UNC. Early playing time is important to Allen, and NC State can sell that. There are some who believe that UNC is well-positioned with other high-profile running backs Omarion Hampton and George Pettaway. It might help NC State if Allen is ready to decide before Hampton and/or Pettaway make any decisions. If Allen waits until they are off the board, and neither ends up at UNC, the reality of early playing time at UNC increases.
