The Run Down The Run Down (May 24)

1. There was a time period where NC State would try to get a few under the radar prospects from South Carolina each recruiting cycle.

From big defensive tackle Thomas Teal to talented but troubled running back Mustafa Greene or cornerback Nick McCloud, who beat the odds and made the NFL, NC State would find a player from South Carolina who made an impact.

A big credit to those recruiting wins went to former running backs coach Des Kitchings, who is from the Palmetto State. Then there was a period where the focus became more laser focused on Georgia and Florida and not so much South Carolina.

Those winds have started to change with the recruiting success both present and in the past at other jobs of receiver coach Joker Phillips and quarterback coach Kurt Roper. With Phillips coaching the outside receivers and Roper having three scholarship quarterbacks, it’s also easier for them to zero in on who they want.

NC State is back to having a presence in the state. Junior quarterback commit Will Wilson of Columbia (S.C.) Richland Northeast will help the recruiting cause, and if freshmen receivers Christian Zachary and Jimmar Boston become impact players, that will help the cause, and same for sophomore cornerback Brandon Cisse.

The Wolfpack Central has had several stories on the next wave of South Carolina players that Wolfpack have offered or have unofficially visited campus.

Malik Clark, 2025 wide receiver
Cam Strong, 2025, cornerback
Jayvon Gilmore, 2026 quarterback
Jaylen McGill, 2026 running back
Donovan Murph, 2026 wide receiver

NC State also reached out and offered Jordan Crim of Camden (S.C.) High this past week, who is a 6-1, 170-pound defensive back/athlete, and the Wolfpack have recruited well at his high school over the last few years. If the Wolfpack want to go after a tight end, the foundation is there for junior Mike Tyler of Hammond School in Columbia, S.C.

Add in sophomore defensive back Camdin Portis, who is making the move from Fort Mill (S.C.) Indian Land High to Charlotte (N.C.) Myers Park, and he’s another prospect with an NC State offer.

Recruiting A theory for the 13th slot...

There have been a few rumblings about NC State and the 13th slot.

One source of a portal post player thinks the Wolfpack could hold out until the May 29 college deadline and try and convince Mohamed Diarra that playing professionally in Europe is not the move, even if he just doesn't like school much. I don't think Diarra affected the in-decision of ECU power forward Ezra Ausar, but now that so many of the better power forwards are off the board, waiting and trying on a Hail Mary for Diarra could make sense.

Ausar, Manhattan freshman power forward Seydou Traore, Fairleigh Dickinson power forward Ansley Almonor and Illinois State power forward Myles Foster is what is out there for the most part. Foster just visited or is about to visit Notre Dame. Almonor is at Kentucky.

Let's Go Tarheels!

Hopefully the only time I will ever say this in my life.

But a HUGE tip of the hat to these great young men at UNC who refused to allow the American Flag to be lowered from half staff (after the murder of the 4 cops in Charlotte) and to be desecrated by these Hamas-loving useful idiots. There might be hope for that place yet!!

Recruiting Frank Anselem decision day...

Former Syracuse and Georgia reserve center Frank Anselem picks a school today, with NC State, Louisville, Wisconsin and Georgia Tech on his list. I don't think think the Badgers and Yellow Jackets are on him after getting other post players, but we'll see. NC State has one remaining scholarship, and the hope is that Anselem would be a better version of what Ernest Ross and Ebenezer Dowuona were in that role.
