2024 Swimming and Diving Championship Season

With a nod to Syd 64, the US Olympic trials start June 15 in Indianapolis. There will be several familiar Wolfpackers on deck.

I had conversations with two recent former Pack swimmers over the holiday weekend at family gatherings. Both competed for other high-level college programs before landing in Raleigh. They both had great things to say about Coach Holloway and the way he trains and prepares his swimmers. They loved their time at NC State. They both commented on the specificity of the training for their events.

Looks like Berkoff and Kennedy have the best shot to make the team; maybe one of the distance swimmers or Hayes can have a PR swim. Among alumi, Held and Ress have the best chances to make the team in MHO. Curtiss could have a breakthrough swim.

I am particularly interested in what David Curtis can do after a year of training independently. I have seen a few of his workouts, and it appears that he is training exclusively for the 50 alone.

Did I miss a transfer?
Will Gallant transferred after 2023. Ross Dant graduated this year.
Edit:
From the SwimSwam comments it seems Gallant will return to State next Season. Adding David Bethleham makes an incredible distance group.
Men’s team will be loaded. Can we get a diver to score final points at NCAA’s?

Strong core of Wolfpack women swimming recruits coming to Raleigh in the fall:

Virginia isn't losing ground to anyone in women's swimming.

The new expanded ACC is well represented in the rankings.

UVA will keep winning. Cal has a strong recruiting class.
There’s some dissatisfaction among the UVA swimming alumni about DeSorbo’s performance on the men’s team. Their best swimmer just left and the Men struggle to make the top 10 while the women dominate.
He has two stud recruits coming on the men’s side. Their performance is critical.

Re-rank of the 2024 men's recruiting class. Winkler stayed #1. Diehl isn't included in the re-ranking. He was ranked #2 behind Winkler as a junior.

The Men are loaded next year. Need some improvement in the sprints. However, we have to do better in the 200FR which will lead to better results in the 800FR relay.
The women are reloading with some new young swimmers.

I saw David Curtiss work out today. He’s noticeably thicker.
I’ve always thought swim speed is a function of strength, flexibility and technique. Did he improve strength without sacrificing in other areas?
So far this year his results have lagged his previous best times.
Looking forward to Olympic trials. We’ll see what David & the TAC crew cooked up.

He did a lot of good things for the Pack.

Bowers finaled in the 200 Fly this year at NCAA's. Great achievement. Swam a workout next to him last Summer. Extreme effort on every set. Very friendly, personable talking on the deck afterwards. If you haven't competed in may be difficult to understand the strength and pain management/tolerance it takes to be successful in Bowers best event the 200 Fly.
Maybe like sprinting the last turn & homestretch of the 1500 in track?
To illustrate the effort I linked Andreas Vazaios 2019 200 fly championship below. Watch his last two turns and see how he separates from a championship field by staying underwater longer while his lungs are screaming and acidosis is building in his body. He compartmentalized and focused on the technique and strength training that got him there. Awesome swim. It still blows my mind.

One of the most amazing, and unexpected, swims I have seen by a Pack swimmer.
Hayes was another. Something about 200 fly. I never swam the event but 100 was enough for me.

How many <22 sec 50 FR women will the Pack have next season?
Have to get more sprinters.

Doesn't look like there are any on the current roster for next year and none of the top recruits seem to have times under 22 seconds.

There are three swimmers Erika Pelaez 21.91, Lily Christianson 21.72 and Transfer Olivia Nel 21.92 that should help.
