Could Dave Pull a Tony Bennett?

In a group text with friends this topic came up. Just as a successful, veteran coach like Bennett looked around at the changing landscape and said, “yeah, this ain’t what I signed up for”, and decided to get out. Could a very rational, common sense guy like Doeren have the same epiphany at this point in his career?

Interested in what others think. Personally, if I put myself in his shoes, including the knowledge of now having generational wealth, I’d probably make the same decision. You’re no longer playing with a level playing field, if you ever were. But now it’s beyond manageable if you aren’t one of the elites.

Football at a school like State has now become an irrelevant past time. Nothing more than a backdrop for a nice gathering or party. Sure, Dave may still wax on with some hollow words of challenging for a championship. But literally no one expects those words to carry any real meaning. Not even Dave if truth be told. So he may ask himself, whats the point? Why am I here when I could be fly fishing in the mountains?
