Mack Brown Retirement Rumors (Sports Illustrated)

Didn't Mack say on TV (ESPN interview I think) that Howell is leaving for the NFL and "to make a lot of money"?

I guess I don’t see what everyone else sees. Different skills but seems like a Turdbiscuit, Glennon, Brissett level QB to me. Good but not special.

Duke: The Blue Devils remain a team that may have its coach retire, with industry sources telling SI that Utah and North Carolina may also fall in that category by the end of the season. As far as UNC goes, it remains to be seen if Mack Brown wants to go out on this sour of a note, with a feeling of a missed opportunity in 2021 given Clemson's down year and a high-level quarterback talent in Sam Howell.

From today. I figured he would only coach 1-2 more years but leaving right now would be surprising. I doubt SI makes stuff up, seems like coaching agents are whispering. Also, makes it even more apparent that the only way they are landing some of these cruts' is by paying them under the table NIL. These kids have to know that Grandpa Mack will be put out to pasture soon.
Would it help us or hurt us if Mack retires?

Per the Athletic, Mack is denying any truth to the rumors and in fact says he hasn't even thought about retiring. Blames the rumors on rival coaches being upset with how well UNC is recruiting and trying to disrupt that recruiting momentum. Either way he can't have more than 2-3 years left.

He recruited well from the jump but his best players were Fedora’s. Hasn’t translated well to the field and Winter is coming.

I’d love to know how much communication takes place behind the scenes from UNCs staff and the National folks at Rivals & 247. I think you would find some collusion taking place . Heck , 247 has even aligned themselves with the money laundering “GameDay Recruits” LLC being run by a low level coach in VA with funding rumored to come from a Chapel Hill financial advisor .

We haven't "beaten up" any QB this season, in fact, we have rarely gotten meaningful pressure on them so I'm not sure why you think we can suddenly leave him "hobbled and hurt".
You may want to ask Malik Cunningham about that.

And the Syracuse Qb. Don't remember his name and couldn't read it, he spent so much time on his back yesterday.

To be fair, most of his highly regarded guys are only in their second year so not that unexpected that those guys may not be killing it yet, especially given how many of those are DL guys. Howell and K Brown were the only big time gets in that first class (remember Mack wasn't hired until November so he didn't have much time to recruit) and they have gone 1 for 2 on those big gets. What will begin to tell the tell will be next year because that highly regarded 2020 class with Grimes, Evans, Conley, KBJ, Murphy, Pinder (who has already left), Criswell (4 star QB), Downs, and Rose (already left) should be major contributors and the ones who are going to live up to the hype should by then be doing so. We already see that Grimes and Downs are obviously stars, and Murphy has been solid, but Evans, KBJ and some others from that group are still to be determined. The 2021 class that garnered such hype with Ritze, Dillworth, Silver, Boykins, Sutton, Maye, Stephens, Echols, Nesbitt and Nash (all 4 stars) will also need to begin to show that they are worthy of the hype. But make no mistake, at some point when you land three consecutive classes with the talent they have in the 20, 21 and now 22 classes, even an average coach is going to win a good number of games. My hope is that Mack is the one still leading the charge over there and he doesn't bail and they end up landing someone who can actually put all of that talent to use in actually winning games.

I would think a big NIL check and an insurance policy could keep him in CH for another year.

Calling Grimes a “star” after he has repeatedly been burned time after time this year is next level gas lighting lol . Wow man , you just can’t help yourself .

That's next level conjecture.

The coach said on national TV that he's leaving, that he supports the decision, and that Howell will walk on senior day. Not really any ambiguity there.

Every corner is going to get burned my man, even the really good ones. And unlike you and a few others on this board, ilI can look past the colors that a kid wears when i discuss his abilities as a player. He’s cocky and I’m not a fan of some of the talking and other nonsense he does on the field at times, but as a true soph, he’s already one of the better corners in the ACC and will be a pro, most likely leaving after next year.

JPack, I saw on some article about the Manning kid that will be in next year's class has now included UNC in his top schools. Do you have any info on that? If that is true, how is Mac getting in on so many 4 and 5 star kids? How did he steal the receiver from SC that recently committed to him from Clemson and UGA. It seems that there is something going for him to be doing so well and from all over the country.

Certainly there is.........$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

Manning kid does not need money and his Uncles will nto allow him to go to UNC - they would send him to Cut (Duke) prior to UNC!!!

UNC is promising these kids 6 figure NIL deals before they even set foot on campus. They have a slick operation going over there.

You mean the WR from VA that is reportedly affiliated with a “recruiting service” being financed out of Chapel Hill?

The money is available for any school to use via NIL. Just there is the gray area about schools not directly being involved in using it in recruiting, but we all know every school that can use that is using that. Some schools are just better situated to take advantage of that than others and UNC is better suited to do that than we are. Mack has loaded up the cupboard for the next guy with how he has recruited. The question is will he stick around for another year or two to see if he can ride out in a big way with all of the talent he has accumulated. Or will it be left for the next guy to capitalize on?
Maybe Howell is like “I’ll come back if I get $1,000,000 plus in NIL money, and a huge injury insurance policy”. Wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Mack really only has a year at best left in him. This year went south pretty bad. He is losing his best QB ever and his DC can’t get out of his shadow. I don’t see it much better next year either. There is no way he can look this freshman classes parents in the eye and say I will be your sons coach for their time here at UNC. Bold face lie.
Sam is not his best QB ever. Vince Young is.

No chance a Manning ends up at UNC. He’ll end up a football school. Someone above mentioned money….LOL…he’s a Manning…

No sir. There was a 4 star receiver from SC that committed to the cheaters this past week.
OK. I guess I’ll take your word for it. He must not have announced it since there aren't any WRs from SC on any of the commitment lists I checked.

No, he is going to play because like him or hate him, the kid is a big time competitor and isn't going to miss the opportunity to stick it to us in what could be and likely is, his last chance to beat us. And by not losing to us, I meant the teams that he led (as in his 3 years at UNC).
Good thing is that if he plays he will get his ass handed to him and end his career in a loss. Little blue boy can bring it on

The GameDay recruits is a Hole players dad. Pretty obvious they are funnelling NIL money or ideas to the talent they have landed from VA through him. And he’s on Twitter trashing the Pack. This season on the field and our success must be driving him crazy

An average coach will win if the players mentioned are actually good. Most of the guys you have mentioned so far appear to be paper tigers who haven’t shown they can play yet IMO

The same Grimes and Duck who have been touted as a “top CB duo in CFB” but actually can’t really play and are weak links on a very mediocre defense. But they sure like to chirp and talk!

Kid was from VA and is paid for through the already mentioned “recruiting service” aka the grimes kid’s dad.

I have a couple of kids going to state .They gave me the scoop on one of OUR nil deals involving a grocery store chain
Also gave me the scoop on some news we'd rather not hit the press.
