Men's Basketball NC State lands McNeese State coach Will Wade

No doubt. I think the university splurged and I think the fans anted up as well. And I give Boo credit for two things. He kept it pretty confidential and didn’t let nc state get drug through the media. And he pushed his own boundaries. This isn’t a typical hire for Boo but he pushed his own limits.
Boo did a FANTASTIC job of getting this done in 9 days with few leaks. I think he also got some strongly suggested suggestions- not the total bypass that Bubba endured during the BB hire but a whole lotta’ suggestions
I certainly hope this puts an end to the “Boo is a weak AD” nonsense

What a great headline to open this site too this afternoon. For the first time in my life as a State fan I feel like we absolutely nailed a hire! Great job by Boo getting this done. Gotta be excited about this if you are a Wolfpack fan. Time for me and bunch of others to ante up going forward! The university and big dogs certainly did!
This might be the first “major” hire we’ve ever made in a major sport at NC State. I put major in quotes because it might depend on what exactly you consider major, but consensus is Wade qualifies. Now some of our coaches became “major”, but that was while they were at State. Our basketball coaches and where they came from…

Keatts - UNCW
Gottfried - broadcaster
Lowe - NBA assistant
Sendek - Miami (Ohio)
Robinson - East Tennessee
Valvano - Iona
Sloan - Florida
Maravich - State assistant
Case - high school

That goes back to 1946 when Case was hired, almost 80 years… pre ACC.

Well I’m adding to NIL money today, and I hope everyone here is able to do so as well. I can’t wait to see what he can do with our help.
Yep. I kicked in some snd have a pledge. Nothing huge but better.

Look back where NC State coaches have come from

Wrote about that last week.

I like this guy going head to head with Hubert and the rest of the league. As long as we give him the resources.

I will go on record and say he was my 2nd choice but I’m very happy with the deal and pleased with Boo as usual. I felt Gainey could have been a home run hire but he could also flop. Wade will not flop. Wade is the safe pick. We may loose him in a few years but we can cross that bridge later. No use worrying about something that hasn’t happened. And He will win. And the fans really wanted Wade and will be more inclined to support the program financially.

And to also go on record, I’m pretty sure Wade will bend the rules at times and I am totally fine with it. There are no more rules with the ncaa. And with the Great Unpleasantness at unc I don’t have to apologize to anyone. Never thought I would say this but I want someone 5hatthat will push the limits.
I will go on record that Wade will make more of a winning impact in his first 2 years in basketball Stste than Bellicheck will make in his first 2 years in football at UNC. It’s just that big of win ing hire for us.

I'm saving the breakout for when Wade actually comments that it is done. IF and I believe when at this point, this becomes official, it will be the best revenue sports hire in 30 years at NC State. I desperately wanted Wade when Keatts was chosen and he's done nothing but prove me right since that time. The dude can flat out coach and he isn't going to back down from anyone. He can play multiple ways depending on his roster makeup and he has recruiting connections that will pay dividends. Duke is a freaking winner! Let's get this done and announced and when it is, I am looking to purchase season hoops tickets for the first time since Gott's second year.
He's not going to comment while he's still coaching another team in the tournament.

If people don’t appreciate Boo now they never will. Best athletic hire for us since Valvano.

Thanks for linking that. I had missed it.

So for Everett Case, I’d always been told he came to State from the Indiana high school ranks, and recruited Indiana strong. Looking a little deeper, it’s kinda confusing. What I found said in 1943 (WWII era) Depauw U started a “naval flight preparatory school”, and Case was named “athletic director” over basketball. Not sure exactly what kinda competition we’re talking here?

Anyway… All the rest I nailed ‘em!
Still thinking I’m pretty close on Case.

I’ve been vocal in the opposite direction so I won’t be inconsistent now. However, there is zero doubt about Wade’s coaching ability and never has been. We’re also in a different era of college sports, so in Boo I trust and Go Pack!
I absolutely get that, and you are as justified in your opinion as is anyone else. Here’s kinda how I’m looking at this…

Things happen for a reason. If Wade hadn’t run afoul of the ncaa, he’s most likely out of our reach right now. I firmly believe well defined parameters are the key, and I feel sure boundaries will be made clear from the outset at NC State. Furthermore, his infractions then are all the rage now (and basketball related, not a sexual deviance or substance abuse). And too, as you suggest everything is different.

Personally, I’m tired of the “thank you sir, may I have another” passivity of NC State athletics. Our mbb team taught us all a lesson with their miracle run to close out last season — Yeah, why the hell not us? We don’t need to back down or apologize to anybody! The ncaa can suck it! GTHC! We’re NC State! Go Wolfpack!

AgWolf,

Excellent post! Well stated sir. I salute 🫡 you.

I feel like Amato was a huge splash for us. Sure, an assistant, but just barely. He drove that era of great facilities growth and fundraising with that excitement.
Well, again, football would be a little different conversation… but even as much as I appreciated Amato, he still came here as a career assistant before being tapped as HC at his alma mater. And that was my original point… we have never really gone after the “name” or established coaches. So okay, football…

Doeren, TOBy, Amato, MOC, Sheridan, Reid, Kiffin, Rein, Holtz, Edwards… that takes us back to early/mid 1950’s.

Before being hired as head football coach at NC State, most of those guys were assistants (one from within), and the HCs in that list were at small schools… except, arguably, for TOBy… and as I mentioned previously, not my cup o’ tea.

Texas about to go down, you may get your wish yet on Wade.

One putt,
If I recall correctly, I was pretty down on Boo as an Athletic Director. However, some posts that you made (that I would not have known otherwise) changed my tone. Thanks again. He once again has proven his worth!
No sweat. He just doesnt play everything out in the media. He is the opposite of drama

Well said. You have been spot on with the real details of the entire athletic department! Good job!

Will be interested to see what big names flock to the Pack with Wade and that NIL. We will know very quickly where we now stand in the college basketball world. Scheduling will be of high interest to me. Curious how Wade will do it.
Hey Stu, We can talk basketball again! Got some hope! :)

You are one of the best and most consistent posters on this board. Your opinion is greatly respected.

There are some significant supporters that have made large contributions/ commitments to get this deal done. WP Nation needs to also step up to keep the entire program progressing.
This. We need a ground swell of people who haven’t supported the program through the WPC or NIL collective to show their commitment to our athletic program and major donors for their huge investment.

We as regular fans cannot turn our back on them and must give to the WPC and or collective more than the minimum to keep your tickets and something from folks who never give, even small regular donations, to show the big supporters they are not alone. You just can’t expect others to do everything in terms of financial support like we seem to do - and all you have to do is look at wpc member and 1Pack numbers to see this.

And I can tell you there are some of these major donors on these boards (if you haven’t figured it out by now) so let’s show them we are a truly supportive Wolfpack nation! We have a new life in BB, let’s all make it thrive.

I made a very similar comment to my State buddies yesterday...this is literally the first hire in any sport I follow that has me excited. We need to cross all tee's and dot all the I's and hire a GM. At that point I think we will be in the best position to win since Saint V held court. I call Jimmy V Saint V as he will always be the measuring stick for all others to me.

Anyone still a little nervous about the Texas job opening...?
I know reports are that they are going to look at some unrealistic options, but the more realistic list probably has Sean Miller at the top. But I'm not sure that Wade isn't somewhere on that list and I just would prefer to know that our deal is sealed tight already which I know can't happen until after McNeese is out. Go Tigers!

Would a run in the tourney be a possible issue for us regarding signing WW? Not too worried but the more the wins he gets in the tourney the more his value goes up to other schools. I don't know how the agreement was made and assume he is a man of his word, but I am in a business where if you don't have a signed contract you have nothing.
