Men's Basketball NC State vs. Brigham Young game thread...

Middlebrooks gets his fourth foul with 9:17 left.

Traore grabs the offensive rebound and gets the basket and is fouled by Styles, who fouls out with 8:40 left. Traore makes the free throw, 65-44 BYU.

D. Parker makes a corner 3-pointer against the zone, 65-44 BYU.

Hall misses a wide-open 3-pointer, and T. Parker races down for the layup, 65-46 BYU.

Timeout, 7:57 left.

So this was the so-called "Revenge Tour"? Maybe we can schedule these teams again next year and call it the "Revenge Tour Redux."

Yesterday, they looked like a team that could be good, if they had anyone that could make a 3. Then the last 10 minutes, they got out-efforted by Purdue. Today, they look like 5 individuals, who have no energy.
Both Purdue and BYU just put in so much more effort to rebounding, loose balls, defense. It’s really dramatic how much less intensity that we have than our opponents. I imagine BYU will also outrebound us by double digits.

Wonder what spin Stu will put on this performance.

Maybe “A few dozen 3’s away from being competitive”?

Good teams don’t lose like this. At least the buyout won’t be so bad this year.

Taylor with the craft move against Demin to draw the foul. He splits the free throws, 65-47 BYU. NCSU grabs the offensive board and Taylor makes the 3-pointer, 65-50 BYU.

Keita draws the foul on Huntley-Hatfield going for a board. He splits the free throws, 66-50 BYU.

BYU turnover turns into a Huntley-Hatfield fastbreak dunk, his first two points of the game, 66-52 BYU. He comes out with Middlebrooks in.

Hall is fouled and he makes 1 of 2 free throws, 67-52 BYU.

Taylor with a foul, but first a timeout, 3:37 left.

KK is setting things up just like last year. We will be awful until tourney time

I think most would agree, that last year bought Keatts at least two years, if not three.

Saunders makes both free throws, 69-52 BYU.

Taylor is going down shooting, hits a 3-pointer, 69-55 BYU.

Demin passes on a layup to give to Traore for the bucket and foul. He makes the free throw, 72-55 BYU.

T. Parker gets it over Traore and gets the roll, 72-57 BYU.

T. Parker gets to the rim, 72-59 BYU.

BYU with shot clock violation, 19.1 seconds left.

O'Connell gets to the rim, 72-61 BYU.

Final

I think that depends on whether he demonstrates that he learned something or whether he doubles down on the approach that put him on the hot seat.

I don't think it's about learning, just a once in a lifetime run that occurred, and now he's starting over in many ways this season, and he'll have to start it over again next year too. What happens when you live in the portal.

Impressed with the BYU coach. Controlled the game from the tipoff

For us , just have to shake one's head about how we set up to attack their zone. good gracious.

Outrebounded badly. Ben and HH struggled offensively, and Styles played poorly. 12-34 on 2 point shots, and that included 3 late baskets from T Parker and O’Connell. So, 9-31 (29%) otherwise.

What I just don’t get…..KK had to see the value of Diarra on the rebounding end of things. But he went small ball with Styles. And that’s knowing that BHH is not a great rebound guy. Where is our Power forward dedicated to grabbing the damn ball when the other team misses.

The once in a lifetime miracle run has NC state stuck with this coach for another 1-3 years. While it was extremely enjoyable while it was happening last year, I think most people who have followed the program under Keatts knew what it was and what it was going to mean long term for the program unfortunately.

I know I’m jumping the gun on “fire Keatts”, but this can’t continue. Same pre tournament garbage from years past.
What will help is that the ACC isn't top heavy with just two teams ranked in the top 25. This team will change in some ways with Mike James in the lineup, but he's not a power forward and he hasn't been a lockdown three-point shooter in the past. But he'll play with Taylor and Styles at the two-through-four and it will be a different look.

Other than Ezra Ausar, it never seemed to get close to landing a good-sized power forward.

We haven’t had a clue as to how to attack a zone on any consistent basis for 6 years. Why would it change now. The announcers said it best, “NC State’s half court offense has looked rough”.

I said lat week we will know a lot more about our team after this week, well now we know. We weren’t even competitive in these two games.

Got absolutely bullied out there today. BHH got punched early and shrank out there today. BYU also plays really smart hoops and we just got completely outclassed.

Unfortunately the offensive woes may be even worse than I thought. If MOC is your top scoring option, that’s really bad news. We just don’t have any currently who can go get a bucket and the 3-point shooting is dreadful.

Was it me or did their guards look bigger than our forwards?
Demin is around 6-8, and Catchings is around 6-7 and play on the perimeter. The players who have taken a Mormon Mission clearly are men, but this isn't a big NC State team on the court when playing one post player. When you have Taylor, Hill, Styles and James, all guys between 6-3 and 6-6.

I think it’s a bit early , especially until we see James, to go quite there yet. However, I think concern is definitely warranted. Hate to say it but Texas becomes very important and the openers versus FSU at UVA will be telling.

You. cant have three guys in your starting 5 that struggle to score the basketball, and if you do, you are going to struggle as a team on offense. Defensively, we spend way too much time closely guarding guys 25-30 feet from the bucket only to get blown by causing defensive rotation issues or picking up cheap fouls.

This team has absolutely no clue what there doing on offense and no one that can shoot. Very disappointed in keatts not getting shooters in portal. Really not sure why he thought Marcus hill would translate to major college basketball. He should be a 8th or 9th man and is starting
Tried to tell everyone. Too short. Game not going to translate when playing real competition.

You have to admire MIddlebrooks' tenacity and effort. He never slacks off. However, he frequently plays like a bull in a china shop, and unfortunately his energy seems to result in as many positives for the opposing team as it does for the Wolfpack.

I cede your point on defense but it’s hard as heck to win losing the rebound battle by 17. That’s just a dagger and the most concerning to me. If you go big with Ben maybe that stems that issue a bit but then the offensive issues wil surface.

Exactly. Why does our fan base expect anything different? Unless you recruit players like Duke/Unc it takes 75% of the season played to gel. Oh wait, unc & Duke have lost plenty already as well. Just need to finish top 4 in the ACC. We aren’t going to get in more than 4 ACC teams regardless of post season success. And NC State doesn’t have the $ or pull to recruit enough 4 and 5 star players. Portal means it takes forever to gel. Guaranteed losses to any good team until January. Accept it. Hopefully the experimenting pays off by February.
