So I just finished reading "K: The History of Baseball in Ten Pitches" by Tyler Kepner. Each chapter highlights the players known for throwing specific pitches (fastball, curve, slider, etc.) throughout history, all the way back to the 1800's. It includes many of the Negro League greats, also. The chapter on spitballs is really entertaining. You old guys like me will remember a lot of the players and moments he highlights (not from the 1800's!).

I bought a copy for my dad and father-in-law for Father's Day and copies for the coaches of our kids' baseball team. And one for myself. You baseball geeks will enjoy it.
