Wendell's mother made some really good points in her speech the other day. Most of them were lost by the headlines of her comparing the NCAA to slavery and prison. I was listening to The Playbook on SiriusXM last night, and the hosts of the show got into a great discussion about a major for student athletes along the same lines as dance majors or theater majors. Mrs. Carter makes many of the same points. And would a two year program for the major sports programs really differ that much from State's Ag Institute? Also, not every student athlete will choose this option because most of them realize they may play professionally but only for a short time and they will need a long term Plan B. It really isn't rocket science..... unless that's what they choose to study (and then good dang luck!)

But there were also some very good points made in rebuttal to Mrs. Carter's opinion that her son's services were not "paid for". A year at Duke is worth around $70,000. And how much more is Wendell Carter worth in the draft after a year with Coach K than he would have been playing at Harvard or in Europe or the D league? Maybe more, maybe not. And let's not forget that the one-and -done rule is the NBA's policy, not the NCAA's. These kids don't have to choose the NCAA for their one year out of high school, but if they do, they understand what they are signing up for. Having said that, I believe they should receive some compensation, and we should give some thought to a sports major.
