Carnesecca was the epitome of New York City. From 1965-to-1970, and 1973-1992, he was the coach at St. John’s and went to the NIT or NCAA Tournament every year, including 18 trips to the Big Dance.

He especially ran hot in the mid-1980s with Chris Mullin, Bill Wennington, Walter Berry and Mark Jackson, reaching the 1985 Final Four.

Also coached Ron Rowan, the father of Maverick Rowan.
