NC State press release:

Senior tight end Cole Cook has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2017 John Mackey Award, which is given annually to the nation’s most outstanding collegiate tight end.

Cook has played in 38 games as a traditional, hand-on-the-ground tight end for the Wolfpack, starting 15 contests. A team captain as a junior, the Carrolton, Ga., native has never graded below 90% on his blocking assignments in the last two seasons.

“Cole is a tough, physical tight end who - although he might not get as much attention as some of his teammates - is invaluable to us,” said head coach Dave Doeren. “He was a captain for us last year as a junior, which is a testament to his leadership skills and work ethic.”

NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position and a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.

The Mackey Award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and will be announced on December 6, 2017 and then presented live on December 7, 2017 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.
