Is college football transitioning to a new emphasis and priority of great defenses? Great offenses, like UNC's, simply can't carry the load even though putting up big offensive numbers.

Texas A&M recruited Jimbo Fisher reportedly an offensive genius, but fired him and replaced him with Mike Elko, the former TAMU defensive coordinator.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are 10-2 and poised to take on the number 2 ranked Michigan Wolverines in the Big 10 Championship game. They’ve had a challenging schedule with the 35th most difficult schedule (NC State’s schedule difficulty is rated at 31s).

Now here is the kicker. Iowa has an anemic offence rated 124th best of 133 NCAA teams.

But their defense is terrific, ranked 7th best overall.

Look at the season NC State has had so far, 9-3, with, like Iowa, an offense that doesn’t scare anyone, but a Tony Gibson led 3-3-5 that wreaks havoc.

Is the defensive side of the ball now becoming the priority in hiring coaches?
