Two-star defensive tackle/long snapper Jayden Tate, Lincolnton (N.C.) North Lincoln High

These are the top 10 players ranked in order of the odds we see them ending up at NC State.

1. Defensive tackle Rasheed Lyles, Athens (Tex.) Trinity Valley C.C.
Each week, NC State seems to be sending Lyles the latest recruiting graphics, which is a good hint that a player is legitimately being pursued by the Wolfpack. As long as NC State remains Lyles’ lone major offer, he will sit at the top of this list. Lyles had 29 tackles, including 3.5 sacks, as a freshman at Trinity Valley. He is a native of Winnfield, La.
Last week: 1
Projection: NC State

2. Three-star safety Chase Hattley, Cary (N.C.) Panther Creek High
We fully expect Hattley to morph into a NC State-South Carolina battle and he has ties to both schools. Oklahoma is the other school in his top three. The Wolfpack has been recruiting longer than the Gamecocks, which gives them an edge in our opinion. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder is a good athlete (has cleared 6-foot-4 in the high jump in track) and productive. He had 29 tackles, nine interceptions and five pass breakups as a junior. On offense he caught seven passes for 161 yards and three scores.

Projection: NC State

3. Three-star defensive back Nykelius Johnson, West Florence (S.C.) High
We are told that there are a few recruits who are very interested in NC State but want to see how the Wolfpack does this fall first. Johnson may be one of these, and it probably did not help that NC State was beaten handedly by Virginia Tech, the school whom he has committed to.
Last week: 3
Projection: Virginia Tech

4. Three-star offensive lineman Yousef Mugharbil, Murphy (N.C.) High
UNC landing Diego Pounds may have dropped one team off the list for Mugharbil, but like we said in the War Room, we have viewed Florida as a bigger competition for Mugharbil for a while. Nevertheless, the Heels not being a threat, potentially, is a good thing for NC State’s chances. The Pack is still very much in the mix here.
Last week: 5
Projection: Florida

5. Safety Chad Brown, Fresno (Calif.) City Community College
A decision is coming soon, as in this coming Sunday, from Brown. Sources tell us that NC State likes Brown a good deal and would take his commitment, but as of now there is no indication which way Brown is going. It’s worth noting that Brown is a native of Baltimore, so the Pack is closest to his hometown among his current offers that also include Arizona, Boise State, Central Florida (which came last Friday), TCU, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Jose State. The 6-foot-3, 185-pounder had 24 tackles and six interceptions (one pick six) last year as a freshman. Brown’s recruitment has been extremely quiet on all fronts.

Projection: Unknown

6. Three-star defensive tackle Devin Lee, McDonough (Ga.) OLA
There are those who believe that SEC schools Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt will be tough to beat, but if a school does that, it’ll probably be NC State. There is a chance that a decision could be coming pretty soon from him. Vanderbilt is a trendy choice. Lee had 53 total tackles last season, including 26 for loss and 17 sacks. He also had 11 quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and a blocked field goal.
Last week: 6
Projection: Unknown

7. Three-star defensive lineman Javon Nelson, Murfreesboro (Tenn.)
Nelson came out with a top five that included Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Virginia Tech, but we have heard doubts about the Hokies being a legitimate contender from what we have heard. The conventional wisdom with Nelson had been that Vandy and Virginia may be the favorites, but Nelson has played out his recruitment quietly so nobody really knows. The 6-foot-3, 260-pounder is listed by Rivals.com as a strongside defensive end but we believe colleges may be looking at him as a interior lineman.

Projection: Unknown
