We debuted the original top 25 list this week for NC State football recruiting, and since then we have learned more to make what will be a couple of adjustments.

Three-star receiver Quanye Veney from Highland Springs (Va.) High was rated at No. 8 on the list mainly on intelligence we had back in the fall that Veney really liked NC State. He also strongly liked UNC, but the Heels backed off after landing another player. Based on the latest from what we have heard, as we get a better understanding of who is being prioritized, Veney will drop on the list next week.

Former Tennessee commit Jimmy Scott, a three-star defensive end from Athol Springs (N.Y.) St. Francis High, will also drop off the top 25 for similar reasons.

One player that will probably be in line for a good bump is three-star defensive back Ahmarian Granger from Norfolk (Va.) Maury High. We had a chance to speak with Granger on Friday, leading us to believe NC State is in a good early position with him along with Nebraska. Granger is an athlete that some schools like at receiver, but with Wolfpack nickels coach Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay leading the way, NC State is recruiting Granger for secondary.

In a small recruiting note, recent interviews have suggested that the dream of getting four-star quarterback Cade Klubnik from Austin (Tex.) Westlake is highly unlikely, but those hopes took an even further hit on Friday.

Alabama defeated Clemson in a head-to-head recruiting battle for top quarterback Ty Simpson. Within minutes of Simpson picking the Crimson Tide, Clemson extended an offer to Klubnik. There has been a feeling that the Tigers were an offer that Klubnik was hoping/waiting for, and it was widely anticipated that Klubnik was next-up on Clemson's pecking order for QBs. If you would prefer a glass-half-full angle, UNC has emerged as a very strong contender for Klubnik as well and this may slow their momentum.

Speaking of the Tigers, there is chatter that Clemson could start getting into the mix for four-star running back Omarion Hampton from Cleveland High in Clayton, N.C. Hampton and four-star Michael Allen from Rose High in Greenville, N.C., who are NC State’s top two targets at the running back position.

After three straight wins on the road, and given the turmoil at Pittsburgh and recent struggles at Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, one wonders where would NC State men’s basketball team be if it ran the table in the regular season. The overall record would be 14-9 at that point and 10-8 in the ACC, but recent history should confirm that the latter does not matter for the NCAA Selection Committee, and the truth is NC State’s wins total in the ACC would be padded by having home-and-homes with Pitt, Wake Forest and Boston College.

If all things were the same, NC State would have a 2-6 quad one record, 3-2 mark in quad two, 4-0 in quad three and 5-1 in quad four. Its best data point would actually be an impressive 6-5 mark away from home. It's also worth noting though that it is quite possible that the road game at Notre Dame will end up as a quad two contest instead of the current quad one status it enjoys.

Would that be enough to get onto the bubble? An examination suggests that the Wolfpack would need some help from other teams to reach that far, but also it would not be out of reach, either.

According to BracketMatrix.com, the last four teams in the field are Colorado State, Connecticut, Indiana and Wichita State, although the latter two are sliding fast. Here are their current (emphasis on that word) records in the important metrics:

• Colorado State: 2-3 Q1, 1-1 Q2, 3-0 Q3, 7-0 Q4, 7-3 away from home

• Connecticut: 2-3 Q1, 3-2 Q2, 3-1 Q3, 3-0 Q4, 6-3 away from home

• Indiana: 2-9 Q1, 6-1 Q2, 2-1 Q3, 3-0 Q4, 6-6 away from home

• Wichita State: 2-2 Q1, 2-2 Q2, 6-0 Q3, 1-0 Q4, 4-2 away from home

Here are the metrics of the first four teams out: Duke, Georgia Tech, Minnesota and Stanford.

• Duke: 2-3 Q1, 4-4 Q2, 3-1 Q3, 2-0 Q4, 3-4 away from home

• Georgia Tech: 2-6 Q1, 4-0 Q2, 4-2 Q3, 2-0 Q4, 4-5 away from home

• Minnesota: 4-5 Q1, 2-1 Q2, 3-1 Q3, 4-0 Q4, 0-8 away from home

• Stanford: 4-5 Q1, 1-5 Q2, 5-0 Q3, 4-0 Q4, 12-7 away frpm home

All these teams obviously stand a chance to improve themselves, too. For instance, if NC State were to win out, then Duke’s win in Raleigh would bump up from a quad two to a quad one as the Pack would almost surely advance up in the NET rankings into the top 75.

Bottom-line, if NC State were to win out, it probably gets itself into the conversations and “bubble watch” columns, but it would need a good ACC Tournament. And more importantly, its margin for error between now and the ACC Tournament is, frankly, none. Any more losses most likely means its ACC title or bust in terms of Big Dance hopes.
