NC State football welcomes an old friend when Miami head coach Manny Diaz comes Friday night to Raleigh. Tim Peeler did a good job of breaking down Diaz’s journey that really started at NC State. The relationship between Diaz and former NC State head coach Chuck Amato is strong, so much so that last year when Miami played at UNC in Diaz’s first season as the Hurricanes head coach, Diaz invited Amato to attend with a sideline pass. It may have been the first time Amato openly rooted for Miami.

Diaz was a graduate assistant when Amato promoted him to linebackers coach in 2002. At that point, Amato made a rather odd move to not have an official defensive coordinator. Word behind the scenes was that Amato wanted to be in charge of the defense himself. Amato tried that route for a couple of seasons before bringing in Reggie Herring in the 2004 season.

Herring was a huge hit around Raleigh, but after one season he surprised everyone by joining his friend Houston Nutt at Arkansas.

On a side note, there was always a feeling that Herring wanted to get back to the NFL, where he coached for a couple of years with the Houston Texans prior to Amato hiring him. Herring did not like recruiting, even though he was pretty good at it. Herring has been coaching in the NFL since 2008.

When Herring did leave Raleigh, Diaz, understandably, very much desired to replace him. By that point, Diaz had moved to safeties coach (since Herring coached linebackers) and had also taken over special teams. Instead, Amato brought in Steve Dunlap. Diaz coached one more season, but at that point he had let his ambitions to become a coordinator known. Amato was a good reference for Diaz, and after the 2005 season he landed the DC gig at Middle Tennessee State.

Diaz was a popular figure around the Murphy Center and those who knew and worked with him are probably not surprised with how high up the coaching ladder he climbed. The only knock we heard on Diaz when he was in Raleigh was that sometimes he was not eager to hit the recruiting trial.

If you count Diaz as part of Amato’s original staff, that would be three head coaches that emerged from the group, joining Marshall’s Doc Holliday and James Madison’s Curt Cignetti. Plus offensive coordinator Norm Chow had a stint as a head coach at Hawaii, as well.

As for the game tonight, one of the big questions looming is will junior safety Tanner Ingle suit up for the Wolfpack. Ingle is a crucial piece of the Pack defense, especially against the running game. Ingle has been battling his hamstring for a while. Last year, redshirt junior receiver Thayer Thomas dealt with a hamstring all season but was able to play with it.

There was one post-practice media availability where Thomas was literally stretching his hamstring. We don’t know how severe Ingle’s hamstring injury is, but there is some evidence that suggest it would be surprising if he played against the Hurricanes.

The ACC this year has done away with injury reports, so we will not know who’s available and who’s not at that point. For those who have lost track, here’s a running tally:

Lost for the season:

Sophomore safety Rakeim Ashford

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Timothy McKay

Junior cornerback Teshaun Smith

Unofficially lost for the season:

Redshirt freshman nickel Jalen Frazier (Dave Doeren confirmed during his press conference Monday what we had heard which is that Frazier was injured during spring practices. Our understanding is that Frazier had a knee injury)

Senior corner Chris Ingram

Probably lost for the season:

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Devin Leary (small chance Leary could return at the end of the regular season if his rehab goes quicker than expected)

Redshirt freshman safety Khalid Martin
