We are getting the War Room out a little earlier today ahead of three-star defensive end Zyun Reeves' pending announcement, which we understand could come out around 3 p.m. As of this writing, we believe that Reeves will be picking NC State over Virginia and Florida State, with the Cavs recently seeming to have replaced South Carolina in his top-three leaderboard. S.C. and Michigan State also were in his formal top five.

That said, we will not know for certain until Reeves hits send on the tweet.

If Reeves does follow through with announcing for the Wolfpack, then the Pack is likely done with defensive end-types on the line, joining three-star Travali Price from North Lincoln High in Lincolnton, N.C. Price and his brother Jayden Tate, a nose tackle/long snapper, picked the Wolfpack in June.

We noted before, we had one trusted observer tell us that Reeves could be a similar type player to former UNC defensive lineman Jalen Dalton, who now plays for the Chicago Bears. Dalton was not as good as hyped in high school (and probably overrated due to an offer list that was not as official as portrayed), but he was nevertheless, when healthy, a good performer for the Heels and obviously physically gifted enough to make it to the NFL.

Reeves is a high-upside prospect who is still learning how to be a defensive end. East Forsyth stood Reeves up as a pass rusher early in the season before increasing his role and putting his hand on the ground in a stance later.

NC State made a very quick and strong impression on Reeves in January, but there was a point in March where it appeared that Florida State may have overtaken the Pack. If he ends up picking the Pack it could have been a case where the extended recruiting dead period — that is unlikely to be lifted anytime soon — played in NCSU’s favor. The Pack has proximity, more familiarity and defensive line coach Charley Wiles’ popularity around the East Forsyth program in its favor.

FSU insiders we talked with felt that for the Seminoles to have a realistic chance it would have needed another visit, even though they confirmed for us that FSU coaches and Reeves have maintained steady contact.

The recent trip to Virginia last Sunday threw a loop into the conventional wisdom surrounding Reeves' recruitment, however. It was the first evidence that the Cavs were a real serious contender for Reeves, who is also a strong student in the classroom.

Our initial school of thought on the trip: Reeves had originally slated Sept. 1 as his decision date. A trip to Virginia on a Sunday, two days before the announcement, probably would not have been necessary if Reeves was going to pick Virginia. Our experience leads us to think that Reeves probably decided to give the Cavaliers the courtesy of a trip before picking someone else, but the question is did that visit do enough to persuade him away? It has happened before, a recent good example being Clayton (N.C.) High safety J.R. Walker, who made a late trip to Virginia Tech and changed course on a planned decision to commit to NC State.

The following is a synopsis of where NC State’s recruiting stands on a position-by-position basis:

• Quarterback: Done

• Running back: Probably done, but NC State will keep an eye on all-purpose, speedy types if one pops up.

• Wide receiver: Done.

• Tight end: Done.

• Offensive line: This is an interesting position to watch. The board looks a little shakier over growing thoughts that NC State’s position with three-star Yousef Mugharbil from Murphy (N.C.) High may not be as strong as we originally thought. The Pack is squarely a long shot with three-star Diego Pounds from Millbrook High in Raleigh.

However, on the flipside of that coin, is the position as big a need as it once was given that the NCAA has frozen eligibility for this year? A lot may depend on what kind of vibe NC State gets from senior offensive tackles Tyrone Riley and Justin Witt about their future plans. Nevertheless, if there is a position where new names could begin to emerge, this is it.

• Defensive line: If Reeves commits, NC State is well set up on the defensive line with probably room for one more. It could become a race between junior college product Rasheed Lyles and three-stars Devin Lee from OLA in McDonough, Ga., and Marquise Brunson from Princess Anne High in Virginia Beach, Va.

We don’t know if there is a preference from NC State’s standpoint or if it is first-come, first-serve, but our guess is that Lee may be closest to announcing a decision.

• Linebacker: NC State would love to close on three-star Jabril McNeill from Sanderson High in Raleigh, and a decision could soon come there. McNeill has been toying with the idea of making an announcement in September. We like the Pack’s odds, at the moment.

• Defensive back: This, along with offensive line, is the most interesting position to watch going forward. The two names we are watching closest at this point are three-stars Chase Hattley, a safety from Panther Creek High in Cary, N.C., and Nykelius Johnson, a Virginia Tech corner commit from West Florence (S.C.) High.

We also believe that NC State may explore trying to find a defensive back that might be able to play nickel, such as Duke commit Brandon Johnson from Newton-Conover High in Newton, N.C.

As you can see, at this point, we are not sure that NC State — outside perhaps offensive line — is going to be expanding the current recruiting board.
