With all of the talk around NIL, football revenue, spending and the various topics around why we are where we are, I decided to do a little reading and research and I came across a couple of interesting points of reference that I would love for some who may have more insight than I do, to comment on. First of all, if you are interested in some of this information, Sportico is a pretty good sight / financial database for college sports finances. Among the many things I found interesting from their 2022-23 data base was our revenue compared to expenses for football. For that year, NC State football generated $60M but expenses for football that year were only $33.6M. That expense to revenue percentage of 56% was the third lowest of the published numbers of all ACC schools. Only VT with an expense to revenue percentage of 47% and GTech at 53.7% ranked lower than NC State. Clemson led the way with expenses to revenue at 86.8% and FSU was not far behind at 78.3%. The question I have on this particular number is why are we choosing to reinvest such a small percentage of the revenue that football is generating, back into the program? We have only been above 60% in 1 of the past 7 years where as more successful programs are regularly spending 60% or more of the revenue generated by football on football.
Being a relatively fiscal conservative person, I am always looking beyond just what is being spent, but rather where and how effective money is being spent ,and I found these numbers interesting. Would love to get some thoughts from some of you have may have more insight into this. There are some other figures I have come across but am still working to verify that I find equally interesting.
